‘As surely as the Lord your God lives,’ she replied, ‘I don’t have any bread – only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it – and die.’


When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?’ ‘Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,’ Elisha replied.


Elisha said, ‘Go round and ask all your neighbours for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.


Then the Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ ‘A staff,’ he replied.


‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven,’ they replied, ‘and a few small fish.’


Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.’


sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.


Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
