4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.

By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: when he makes all the altar stones to be like limestone crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.


A person too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot; they look for a skilled worker to set up an idol that will not topple.


‘Tell them this: “These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.” ’


Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them.


They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.


‘Announce and proclaim among the nations, lift up a banner and proclaim it; keep nothing back, but say, “Babylon will be captured; Bel will be put to shame, Marduk filled with terror. Her images will be put to shame and her idols filled with terror.”


He will also seize their gods, their metal images and their valuable articles of silver and gold and carry them off to Egypt. For some years he will leave the king of the North alone.


All her idols will be broken to pieces; all her temple gifts will be burned with fire; I will destroy all her images. Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes, as the wages of prostitutes they will again be used.’


Make models of the tumours and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land.
