He sent the ark of his might into captivity, his splendour into the hands of the enemy.


In the year that the supreme commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it –


Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod and to the fortresses of Egypt: ‘Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest within her and the oppression among her people.’


Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and travelled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.


No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod did any survive.

And Samuel’s word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek.


The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.


She said, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.’


When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory for seven months,


Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’
