12 So David took the spear and water jug near Saul’s head, and they left. No-one saw or knew about it, nor did anyone wake up. They were all sleeping, because the Lord had put them into a deep sleep.

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.


So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.


That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.


The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep: he has sealed your eyes (the prophets); he has covered your heads (the seers).


The men said, ‘This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, “I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.” ’ Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.


Then David crossed over to the other side and stood on top of the hill some distance away; there was a wide space between them.


So David and Abishai went to the army by night, and there was Saul, lying asleep inside the camp with his spear stuck in the ground near his head. Abner and the soldiers were lying round him.
