Then, led by Jehoshaphat, all the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem, for the Lord had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies.


Mattaniah son of Mika, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the director who led in thanksgiving and prayer; Bakbukiah, second among his associates; and Abda son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.


‘I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust.


The Lord is my strength and my defence; he has become my salvation.


But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.


And he has raised up for his people a horn, the praise of all his faithful servants, of Israel, the people close to his heart. Praise the Lord.


The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.


May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests.

Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.


This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.
