Even when I am old and grey, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.


to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.’


For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near.


After a long time had passed and the Lord had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man,


summoned all Israel – their elders, leaders, judges and officials – and said to them: ‘I am very old.


because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.


Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.


Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honour your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?”


The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’


For I told him that I would judge his family for ever because of the sin he knew about; his sons uttered blasphemies against God, and he failed to restrain them.


but Eli called him and said, ‘Samuel, my son.’ Samuel answered, ‘Here I am.’


When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.


Then we shall be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.’


But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.


They said to him, ‘You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.’
