The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.


Elisha said to Gehazi, ‘Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.’


Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.

This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.


Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist.


‘Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them.


He told them, “You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.”


‘Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,


‘It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.


Won’t he rather say, “Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink”?


Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.


For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.


Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.


And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.


Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,


When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.


and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.


But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.


Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.


So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.


But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.


We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,


so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.


Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care,


But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,


The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.


With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.


Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.


All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
