They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:


And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.


Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Mer´ibah. Selah.


Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me;


harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:


Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?


And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.


Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.


The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us.


Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;


This is the water of Mer´ibah; because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.


Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Mer´ibah.


For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that is the water of Mer´ibah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.


And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.


Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?


And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Mer´ibah;


Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.


And at Tab´erah, and at Massah, and at Kib´roth–hatta´avah, ye provoked the Lord to wrath.


And Phin´ehas the son of Ele-a´zar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manas´seh, This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the Lord: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.
