Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Jo´ab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.


And Abner said to Jo´ab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Jo´ab said, Let them arise.


And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Hel´kath–haz´zurim, which is in Gibeon.


And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of a hill.


And Jo´ab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.


How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? Mark, and afterward we will speak.


How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?


O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? How long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.


The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.


but if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.


The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the Lord shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.


In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.
