And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.


And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the Lord, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megid´do, and Gezer.


And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Per´izzites, Hivites, and Jeb´usites, which were not of the children of Israel,


And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God.


but of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day.


Now these are the chief of the province that dwelt in Jerusalem: but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in his possession in their cities, to wit, Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the Neth´inim, and the children of Solomon's servants.


The children of Solomon's servants: the children of So´tai, the children of Soph´ereth, the children of Peri´da,


The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.


And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.


As for the Jeb´usites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jeb´usites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.


And they drave not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell among the E´phra-imites unto this day, and serve under tribute.


Yet the children of Manas´seh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.


Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.


And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jeb´usites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jeb´usites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.


And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrab´bim, from the rock, and upward.


And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;


Now these are the nations which the Lord left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
