4 And when these Jews buy something in the market, they never eat it until they wash it in a special way. They also follow other rules from their people who lived before them. They follow rules like the washing of cups, pitchers, and pots.

Lord, I wash my hands to make myself pure, so that I can come to your altar.


“Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean. Stop doing the evil things I see you do. Stop doing wrong.


Then I put some bowls full of wine and some cups in front of the Recabite family. And I said to them, “Drink some wine.”


People of Jerusalem, wash the evil from your hearts. Make your hearts pure so that you can be saved. Don’t continue making evil plans.


“It will be bad for you teachers of the law and you Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You wash clean the outside of your cups and dishes. But inside they are full of what you got by cheating others and pleasing yourselves.


Pharisees, you are blind! First make the inside of the cup clean and good. Then the outside of the cup will also be clean.


Pilate saw that there was nothing he could do to make the people change. In fact, it looked as if there would be a riot. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of them all. He said, “I am not guilty of this man’s death. You are the ones who are doing it!”


You have stopped following God’s commands, preferring instead the man-made rules you got from others.”


There were six large stone waterpots there that were used by the Jews in their washing ceremonies. Each one held about 20 or 30 gallons.


Some of John’s followers had an argument with another Jew about religious washing.


These gifts and sacrifices are only about food and drink and special washings. They are only rules about the body. God gave them for his people to follow until the time of his new way.


Come near to God and he will come near to you. You are sinners, so clean sin out of your lives. You are trying to follow God and the world at the same time. Make your thinking pure.


We should live in the light, where God is. If we live in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood sacrifice of Jesus, God’s Son, washes away every sin and makes us clean.
