One who had escaped came and told Avram, the Hebrew. Now he lived by the oaks of Mamre, the Amori, brother of Eshkol, and brother of `Aner; and these were allies of Avram.


Now, therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son. But according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have lived as a foreigner.*


Avraham complained to Avimelekh because of a water well, which Avimelekh's servants had violently taken away.


He said, *Swear to me,* and he swore to him. Yisra'el bowed himself on the bed's head.


If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.


For men indeed swear by a greater one, and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation.
