Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.


Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.


One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.


lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.


Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the Lord?


And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, ‘We are free, we will come no more to you’?


Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”


Those who buy them slaughter them and go unpunished, and those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the Lord, I have become rich,’ and their own shepherds have no pity on them.


“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.


But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.


he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.


“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.


That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear.


Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.


For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.


Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?


For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.


(“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”)
