14 And as soon as the king of Ai saw this, he and all his people, the men of the city, hurried and went out early to the appointed place toward the Arabah to meet Israel in battle. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

For man does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.


The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish; the wisest counselors of Pharaoh give stupid counsel. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am a son of the wise, a son of ancient kings”?


The princes of Zoan have become fools, and the princes of Memphis are deluded; those who are the cornerstones of her tribes have made Egypt stagger.


While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you,


and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.


the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know


These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.


So they stationed the forces, the main encampment that was north of the city and its rear guard west of the city. But Joshua spent that night in the valley.


And Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled in the direction of the wilderness.


So all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and as they pursued Joshua they were drawn away from the city.


And I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out against us just as before, we shall flee before them.


And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.


Then the men in ambush hurried and rushed against Gibeah; the men in ambush moved out and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.
