Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.


Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.


But none says, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,


Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.


I consider the days of old, the years long ago.


“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.


In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.


There is no one who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.


Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.


“Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.


The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who handle the law did not know me; the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit.


They have spoken falsely of the Lord and have said, ‘He will do nothing; no disaster will come upon us, nor shall we see sword or famine.


Though they say, “As the Lord lives,” yet they swear falsely.


Her cities have become a horror, a land of drought and a desert, a land in which no one dwells, and through which no son of man passes.


By a prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he was guarded.


But I am the Lord your God from the land of Egypt; you know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior.


Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.


the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”


“Then we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And we came to Kadesh-barnea.


“He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.


And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.


And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.”
