may our cattle be heavy with young, suffering no mishap or failure in bearing; may there be no cry of distress in our streets!


Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;


And joy and gladness are taken away from the fruitful field, and in the vineyards no songs are sung, no cheers are raised; no treader treads out wine in the presses; I have put an end to the shouting.


In little more than a year you will shudder, you complacent women; for the grape harvest fails, the fruit harvest will not come.


for the soil of my people growing up in thorns and briers, yes, for all the joyous houses in the exultant city.


And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.


Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is scorched, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no one spares another.


“Judah mourns, and her gates languish; her people lament on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.


The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry; for warrior has stumbled against warrior; they have both fallen together.”


Gladness and joy have been taken away from the fruitful land of Moab; I have made the wine cease from the winepresses; no one treads them with shouts of joy; the shouting is not the shout of joy.


They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves; they rebel against me.


The vine dries up; the fig tree languishes. Pomegranate, palm, and apple, all the trees of the field are dried up, and gladness dries up from the children of man.


Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.


But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
