For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”


Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole her father’s household gods.


And now you have gone away because you longed greatly for your father’s house, but why did you steal my gods?”


Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them in the camel’s saddle and sat on them. Laban felt all about the tent, but did not find them.


And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humiliated her.


While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine. And Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.


And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods?


But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they lived.

Can man make for himself gods? Such are not gods!”


“How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores.


Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel?


And I said to them, ‘Cast away the detestable things your eyes feast on, every one of you, and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.’


I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.


They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.


And anyone who touches his bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening.


But if he does not wash them or bathe his flesh, he shall bear his iniquity.”


You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. And afterward you may come into the camp.”


And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods.


Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”


Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.


Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.


and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known.


They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger.

You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you—

And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.


If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.”


He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he became impatient over the misery of Israel.

And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.


And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your heart to the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”
