Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.


The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.


And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.


So I saw that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his work, for that is his lot. Who can bring him to see what will be after him?


For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?


But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him.


I said, I shall not see the Lord, the Lord in the land of the living; I shall look on man no more among the inhabitants of the world.


saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”
