Deuteronomy 9:3 - English Standard Version 2016

3 Know therefore today that he who goes over before you as a consuming fire is the Lord your God. He will destroy them and subdue them before you. So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly, as the Lord has promised you.

“When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I blot them out,


Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel.


I have no wrath. Would that I had thorns and briers to battle! I would march against them, I would burn them up together.


Behold, the name of the Lord comes from afar, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke; his lips are full of fury, and his tongue is like a devouring fire;


And the Lord will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and storm and hailstones.


For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.


The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless: “Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”


He who opens the breach goes up before them; they break through and pass the gate, going out by it. Their king passes on before them, the Lord at their head.


And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand:

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?


Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.


The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,


“When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.


for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’


For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.


And you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be a snare to you.


The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once, lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you.


“Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people.


in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.


for our God is a consuming fire.


And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.


And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining.


So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said.”


Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is passing over before you into the Jordan.


So when the people set out from their tents to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people,
