Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute?


Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.


You said, “I shall be mistress forever,” so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end.


“Come,” they say, “let me get wine; let us fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow will be like this day, great beyond measure.”


Those who once feasted on delicacies perish in the streets; those who were brought up in purple embrace ash heaps.


“Son of man, what is this proverb that you have about the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to nothing’?


“Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, ‘The vision that he sees is for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’


The sound of a carefree multitude was with her; and with men of the common sort, drunkards were brought from the wilderness; and they put bracelets on the hands of the women, and beautiful crowns on their heads.


“They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord, “those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”


Proclaim to the strongholds in Ashdod and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt, and say, “Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and see the great tumults within her, and the oppressed in her midst.”


For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.


Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light,


Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood—


All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, ‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’


Your rich men are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.


But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed,’


While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.


They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”


For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.” And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off
