O God, why do you cast us off forever? Why does your anger smoke against the sheep of your pasture?


Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them!


Thus says the Lord: “Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce, with which I sent her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities you were sold, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.


‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.


Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;


but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.


And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again.


Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’


So they set out from the mount of the Lord three days’ journey. And the ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them three days’ journey, to seek out a resting place for them.

O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!
