Why should the nations wonder\par where our God is?\par


My enemy constantly insults me\par and strikes a deadly blow\par when he asks me,\par “Where is your God?\par \{Has he come to save you yet?\}”\par


Why should I be so sad?\par Why should I be so upset?\par I should wait for God’s help.\par I will get the chance to praise him yet.\par He will save me!\par


My enemy constantly \{makes fun of me\}.\par He says, “Where is your God?\par \{Has he come to save you yet?\}”\par \{I am so sad\} that my only food\par is the tears \{that fall from my eyes\}.\par


My heart breaks as I remember\par \{the good times I had at the temple\}:\par \{I remember\} passing through the crowds\par as I led them all up to God’s temple.\par \{I remember\} the happy songs of praise\par as the crowds celebrated the festivals.\par


When that happens, people will say:\par “Good people really are rewarded.\par There really is a God\par judging the world!” {\cf2\super [345]} \par


The Lord caught those bad people.\par So people learned that the Lord punishes people who do bad things.\par \i (HIGGAYON {\cf2\super [51]})\i0 \par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [52]})\i0 \par


Lord, you are a God that punishes people.\par You are a God who comes\par and brings punishment to people.\par


You will be my people and I will be your God. I am the Lord your God, and you will know that I made you free from Egypt.


Then the people of Egypt will know that I am the Lord. I will be against them, and they will know that I am the Lord. Then I will lead my people out of their country.”


If you would tear open the skies\par and come down to earth,\par \{then everything would change\}.\par The mountains would melt before you.\par


But I will pay Babylon back.\par I will pay all the Babylonian people back.\par I will pay them back for all the bad things\par that they did to Zion. {\cf2\super [421]} \par I will pay them back so that you can see it, Judah.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


Babylon did terrible things to hurt us.\par Now I want those things\par to happen to Babylon.”\par


“Look at how evil my enemies are.\par Then you can treat them\par the same way you treated me\par because of all my sins.\par Do this because I am groaning\par again and again.\par Do this because my heart is sick.”\par


I will show those nations that my great name is truly holy. You ruined my good name in those nations! But I will show you that I am holy. I will make you respect my name. And then those nations will know that I am the Lord.’” The Lord my Master said those things.


Let the priests, the Lord’s servants,\par cry between the porch {\cf2\super [15]} and the altar. {\cf2\super [16]} \par All of those people should say these things:\par “Lord, have mercy on your people.\par Don’t let your people be put to shame.\par Don’t let other people tell jokes\par about your people.\par Don’t let people in other nations\par \{laugh at us and\} say,\par ‘Where is their God?’”\par


My enemy said to me,\par “Where is the Lord your God?”\par But my enemy will see this,\par and she will be ashamed.\par At that time, I will laugh at her. {\cf2\super [81]} \par People will walk over her,\par like mud in the streets.\par


My friends, don’t try to punish people when they do wrong to you. Wait for God to punish them with his anger. It is written: “I am the One who punishes; I will pay people back,” {\cf2\super [132]} says the Lord.


“The whole world should be happy for God’s people! {Why? Because he helps them}— he punishes people who kill his servants. He gives his enemies the punishment they deserve. And he makes his land and people pure. [217] ”


Be happy because of this, O heaven!\par Be happy, God’s holy people {\cf2\super [134]} and apostles {\cf2\super [135]} and prophets {\cf2\super [136]} !\par God has punished her because of the things she did to you.’”\par
