Our God, you are the great God,\par the awesome, powerful soldier!\par And you are kind and loyal!\par You keep your agreement!\par We have had many troubles.\par And our troubles are important to you!\par Bad things happened to all our people,\par and to our kings and leaders,\par and to our priests and prophets.\par Those terrible things have happened\par from the days of the king of Assyria\par until today!\par


You let me see troubles and bad times.But you saved me from every one of themand kept me alive.No matter how deep I sank,you lifted me out of my troubles.


\{God is ready to punish evil people.\}\par The Lord has a cup in his hand.\par That cup is filled with poisoned wine.\par He will pour this wine (punishment),\par and wicked people will drink it\par to the last drop.\par


Lord God All-Powerful,\par when will you listen to our prayers?\par Will you be angry at us forever?\par


\{In the past, you treated us like\par a very important plant.\}\par You brought your “vine” out of Egypt.\par You forced other people to leave this land,\par and you planted your “vine” here.\par


Will you be angry at us forever?\par


You rejected your agreement.\par You threw the king’s crown into the dirt.\par


Wake up! Wake up!\par Jerusalem, get up!\par The Lord was very angry at you.\par So you were punished.\par \{This punishment was like\} a cup of poison you had to drink.\par And you drank it.\par


Your God and Master, the Lord, will fight for his people. He says to you, “Look, I am taking this ‘cup of poison’ (punishment) away from you. I am taking my anger away from you. You will not be punished by my anger any more.


The Lord, the God of Israel, said these things to me: “Jeremiah, take this cup of wine from my hand. It is the wine of my anger. I am sending you to different nations. Make all those nations drink from this cup.


Be happy, people of Edom.\par Be happy, you people that live\par in the land of Uz.\par But remember, the cup of the Lord’s anger\par will come around to you, too.\par When you drink from that cup (punishment),\par you will get drunk\par and will make yourselves naked.\par


“God said those things would happen to us and our leaders—and he made them happen. He made terrible things happen to us. No other city suffered the way Jerusalem suffered.


“But that person will know the Lord’s anger. That anger will be like a cup of poison in the Lord’s right hand. That person will taste that anger and then he will fall to the ground like a drunk person.


The great city split into three parts. The cities of the nations were destroyed. And God did not forget \{to punish\} Babylon the Great. He gave that city the cup filled with the wine of his terrible anger.
