This was before there were plants on the earth. Nothing was growing in the fields. This was because the Lord had not yet made it rain on the earth. And there was no person to care for the plants.


The Lord God made every beautiful tree and every tree that was good for food to grow in the garden. In the middle of the garden, the Lord God put the tree of life and also the tree that gives knowledge about good and evil.


The ground will grow thorns and weeds for you. And you will have to eat the plants that grow wild in the fields. [19]


In the past, {you planted, and your plants grew well. But now} you will plant, and the ground will not help your plants grow. You will not have a home on the earth. You will wander from place to place.”


{In the past,} I gave you the green plants to eat. Now, every animal will also be food for you. I give you everything on earth—it is yours.


King Ahab said to Obadiah, “Come with me. We will look at every spring and every stream in the land. We will see if we can find enough grass to keep our horses and mules alive. Then we will not have to kill our animals.”


Food grows on the ground above.\par But underground, \{it is different\}—\par as if everything were melted by fire.\par


That rain gives plenty of water\par to that empty land\par and grass begins to grow.\par


God gives food to every person.\par His true love continues forever.\par


Animals of the field, don’t be afraid.\par The desert pastures will grow grass.\par The trees will grow fruit.\par The fig trees and the vines will grow\par plenty of fruit.\par


So the person that plants is not important, and the person that waters is not important. Only God is important, because he is the One who makes things grow.


And I will make grass grow in your fields for your cows. You will have plenty to eat.’
