Numbers 25:11 - Easy To Read Version

11 “I have strong feelings for my people—I want them to belong only to me! Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saved the people of Israel from my anger. He did this by showing those feelings for my people. So I will not kill the people like I wanted to.

They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the area of Benjamin. They buried them in one of the tunnels in the grave of Saul’s father Kish. God listened to the prayers of the people in that land because they did everything the king commanded.


The people of Judah also sinned {and did} things that the Lord said were wrong. The people did more things to make the Lord angry at them. These people were worse than their fathers that lived before them.


God wanted to destroy those people.\par But Moses, the man he chose,\par stopped him.\par God was very angry,\par but Moses blocked the way,\par so God did not destroy the people. {\cf2\super [558]} \par


But Phinehas prayed {\cf2\super [562]} to God,\par and God stopped the sickness.\par


God knew Phinehas did a very good thing.\par God will remember this forever and ever.\par


The people of Israel built high places {\cf2\super [453]} \par and made God angry.\par They built statues of false gods\par and made God very jealous.\par


Don’t worship or serve idols of any kind. Why? Because I, the Lord, am your God. I hate my people worshiping other gods. [125] People who sin against me become my enemies. And I will punish those people. And I will punish their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren.


“A man might start a fire in his field or vineyard. If he lets the fire spread and it burns his neighbor’s field or vineyard, then he must use his best crops to pay his neighbor for his loss. [140]


Don’t worship any other god. I am YAHWEH KANAH—the jealous Lord. That is my name. I am EL KANAH—the jealous God.


Then I will punish you. I will punish you as a murderer and a woman that did the sin of adultery. You will be punished as if by an angry and jealous husband.


The Lord is a jealous God.\par The Lord punishes guilty people.\par The Lord punishes guilty people,\par and the Lord is very angry!\par The Lord punishes his enemies.\par He stays angry at his enemies.\par


Their gold and silver won’t help them! At that time, the Lord will become very upset and angry. The Lord will destroy the whole world! {\cf2\super [8]} The Lord will completely destroy everyone on earth! {\cf2\super [9]} ”


The Lord said, “So just wait! Wait for me to stand and judge you. I have the right to bring people from many nations and use them to punish you. I will use those people to show my anger against you. I will use them to show how upset I am—and the whole country will be destroyed!


The person that believes in the Son has life forever. But the person that does not obey the Son will never have that life. God’s anger stays with that person.”


Doing that would make the Lord jealous {\cf2\super [75]} ! And we don’t want to do that, do we? No, because he is much stronger than we are.


I feel jealousy for you. And this jealousy is a jealousy that comes from God. I promised to give you to Christ. Christ must be your only husband. I want to give you to Christ to be his pure bride. {\cf2\super [30]}


The Lord’s people made him jealous— They worshiped other gods! They worshiped those horrible idols. And that made God angry.


They made me jealous with {demons} that aren’t gods. They made me angry with those worthless idols. So I will make them jealous with people that are not a real nation. I will make them angry with people that are a foolish [213] nation.


Why? Because the Lord your God hates for his people to worship other gods. And the Lord can be like a fire that destroys!


So the people of Israel sent some men to talk to the people of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh. The leader of these men was Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest.


Then Joshua said, “{That is not true.} You will not be able to continue serving the Lord. The Lord God is holy. And God hates his people worshiping other gods. God will not forgive you if you turn against him like that.
