the earth was completely empty; nothing was on the earth. Darkness covered the ocean, and God’s Spirit moved over [1] the water.


My strength is gone,\par like water poured out on the ground.\par My bones have separated.\par My courage is gone! {\cf2\super [126]} \par


The Lord said, “I will change Babylon. That place will be for animals, {\cf2\super [152]} \{not people\}. That place will be a swamp. I will use the ‘broom of destruction’ to sweep Babylon away.” The Lord All-Powerful said those things.


I saw those terrible things, and now I am scared. My stomach hurts because of my fear. That pain is like the pain of giving birth. The things I hear make me very afraid. The things I see make me shake with fear.


Look! The Lord will destroy this land. The Lord will completely clean everything from the land. The Lord will force the people to go far away.


“Ask this question, and consider it:\par Can a man have a baby? Of course not!\par Then why do I see every strong man\par holding his stomach\par like a woman having labor pains?\par Why is every person’s face turning white\par like a dead man?\par \{Why? Because the men are very scared.\}\par


This message is about the city of Damascus:


Then say, ‘Lord, you have said that you will destroy this place, Babylon. You will destroy it so that no people or animals will live in it. This place will be an empty ruin forever.’


My people are hurt,\par so I am hurt.\par I am too sad to speak.\par


Then they will ask you, ‘Why are you making these sad sounds?’ Then you must say, ‘Because of the sad news that is coming. Every heart will melt with fear. All hands will become weak. Every spirit will become weak. All knees will be like water.’ Look, that bad news is coming. These things will happen!” The Lord my Master said these things.


The Lord my Master says these things, “I made the people cry on the day that tree went down to Sheol. {\cf2\super [255]} I covered him with the deep ocean. I stopped its rivers and all the water stopped flowing. I made Lebanon mourn {\cf2\super [256]} for it. All the trees of the field became sick with sadness for that big tree.


King Belshazzar was very afraid. His face became white from fear and his knees were shaking and knocking together. He could not stand up because his legs were too weak.


Before this army, people shake with fear.\par Their faces become pale from fear.\par


Yes, the Lord changed Jacob’s {\cf2\super [5]} pride.\par He made it like Israel’s pride.\par \{The enemy\} destroyed them\par and ruined their grapevines.\par


Everyone who sees you will be shocked.\par They will say,\par ‘Nineveh is destroyed.\par Who will cry for her?’\par I know I cannot find anyone\par to comfort you, Nineveh.”\par


\{God says,\} “I have destroyed whole nations. I destroyed their defense towers. I destroyed their streets and now no one goes there any more. Their cities are empty—no one lives there any more.


We heard about those things and we became very afraid. And now, none of our men are brave enough to fight you. Why? Because the Lord your God rules the heavens above and the earth below!
