11 The people of Judah cheated other people. People in Jerusalem and Israel did terrible things! God loves the temple. {\cf2\super [13]} But the people in Judah didn’t respect the Lord’s holy temple. The people of Judah began to worship that foreign goddess!

Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, spoke to Ezra. Shecaniah said, “We have not been faithful to our God. We have married the people living around us. But, even though we have done this, there is still hope for Israel.


So, people of Israel, don’t let your children marry their children. Don’t join those people! Don’t want the things they have! Obey my commands so you will be strong and enjoy the good things of the land. And then you can keep this land and give it to your children.”


Then at Baal Peor,\par God’s people joined in worshiping Baal.\par God’s people \{joined in the wild parties\par and\} ate sacrifices to honor dead people. {\cf2\super [561]} \par


The people of Israel were a holy gift\par to the Lord.\par They were the first fruit to be gathered\par by the Lord.\par Any people that tried to hurt them\par were judged guilty.\par Bad things happened to those\par wicked people.’”\par This message was from the Lord.\par


Israel’s unfaithful sister (Judah) did not come back to me with her whole heart. She only pretended that she came back to me.” This message was from the Lord.


If you do those sins, do you think that you can stand before me in this house that is called by my name? Do you think you can stand before me and say, “We are safe,” just so you can do all these terrible things?


A person might need to borrow money from that evil son. The son might lend him the money, but he will force that person to pay interest on that loan. So that evil son won’t live. He did terrible things, so he will be put to death. And he is responsible for his own death.


One man does that terrible sin against his own neighbor’s wife. Another man has sex with his own daughter-in-law and makes her unclean. {\cf2\super [171]} And another man rapes his father’s daughter—his very own sister.


But the people broke the Agreement\par just like Adam did. {\cf2\super [65]} \par They were unfaithful to me\par in their country.\par


I have made you my special people. So you must be holy for me! Why? Because I am the Lord, and I am holy!


A message from God. This message is from the Lord to Israel. God used Malachi to give this message.


Why? Because you are different from other people. You are the Lord’s special people. From all the people in the world, the Lord your God chose you to be his own special people.


But the people who are cowards, people who refuse to believe, people who do terrible things, people who kill, people who sin sexually, people who do evil magic, people who worship idols, {\cf2\super [159]} and people who tell lies—all those people will have a place in the lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”


The people of Israel began to marry the daughters of those people. The people of Israel allowed their own daughters to marry the sons of those people. And the people of Israel began to worship the gods of those people.
