“This is the Lord’s message about Sennacherib:


Every person who passes by this temple that was so highly honored will be surprised. They will say, ‘Why has the Lord done this terrible thing to the land and to this temple?’


Bad people insult me.\par They look at me and shake their heads.\par


Everyone who looks at me\par makes fun of me.\par They shake their heads\par and stick out their tongues at me.\par


God’s holy city is at such a pleasant altitude!\par It makes people around the world happy!\par Mount Zion is the true mountain of God. {\cf2\super [288]} \par It is the city of the Great King.\par


In the palaces of that city,\par God is known as the Fortress.\par


God shining from Zion\par is absolutely beautiful!\par


Evil people plan to do bad things\par to other people.\par But God can \{ruin their plans,\}\par and make those bad things\par happen to them.\par Then everyone that sees them\par will shake their heads in amazement.\par


The Lord will fight like he did at Mount Perazim. The Lord will be angry like he was in Gibeon Valley. {\cf2\super [262]} Then the Lord will do the things he must do. The Lord will do some strange things. But he will finish his work. His work is a stranger’s job.


“This is the Lord’s message about Sennacherib:


Our ancestors worshiped you in\par our holy temple.\par Our temple was so wonderful,\par but now it has been burned in the fire!\par All our precious possessions\par have been destroyed.\par


So Judah’s country will become\par an empty desert.\par People will whistle and shake their heads\par every time they pass by.\par They will be shocked\par at how the country was destroyed.\par


I will completely destroy this city. People will whistle and shake their heads when they pass by Jerusalem. They will be shocked when they see how the city was destroyed.


I poured this wine for the people of Jerusalem and Judah. I made the kings and leaders of Judah drink from the cup. I did this so that they would become an empty desert. I did this so that place would be destroyed so badly that people would whistle about it and say curses about that place. And it happened—Judah is like that now!


So I will soon send for all the family groups of the north. {\cf2\super [202]} ” This message is from the Lord. “I will soon send for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He is my servant. I will bring those people against the land of Judah and against the people of Judah. I will bring them against all the nations around you too. I will destroy all of those countries. I will make those lands like an empty desert forever. People will see those countries, and whistle at how badly they were destroyed.


If you don’t obey me, then I will make my temple in Jerusalem just like my Holy Tent at Shiloh. {\cf2\super [206]} People all over the world will think of Jerusalem when they ask for bad things to happen to other cities.’”


I will chase those people that are still in Jerusalem with the sword, with hunger, and terrible sicknesses. And I will make it so that all the kingdoms of the earth will be frightened at what has happened to those people. Those people will be destroyed. People will whistle with amazement when they hear about the things that happened. And people use them as an example when they ask for bad things to happen to people. People will insult them wherever I force those people to go.


“Moab, you made fun of Israel.\par Israel was caught by a gang of thieves.\par Every time you spoke about Israel,\par you shook your head and acted like you\par were better than Israel.\par


Babylon will become\par a pile of ruined buildings.\par Babylon will be a place for wild dogs\par to live.\par People will look at that pile of rocks\par and be amazed.\par People will shake their heads\par when they think about Babylon.\par Babylon will be a place\par where no people live.\par


“Listen to me, because I am groaning!\par I have no person to comfort me.\par All my enemies have heard of my trouble.\par They are happy.\par They are happy that you did this to me.\par You said there would be a time of punishment.\par You said you would punish my enemies.\par Now do what you said.\par Let my enemies be like I am now.\par


Jerusalem sinned very badly.\par Because Jerusalem sinned,\par she became a ruined city\par that people shake their heads about.\par In the past people respected her.\par Now those people hate her.\par They hate her because they abused her.\par Jerusalem groans.\par She turns away.\par


All your enemies laugh at you.\par They whistle and grind their teeth at you.\par They say,\par “We have swallowed them up!\par This is truly the day we were hoping for.\par We have finally seen this happen.”\par


The Lord pulled up his own tent {\cf2\super [13]} \par as if it were a garden.\par He has ruined the place where the people\par went to meet to worship him.\par The Lord has made people forget\par the special assemblies\par and special days of rest {\cf2\super [14]} in Zion.\par The Lord rejected the king and the priests.\par He was angry and rejected them.\par


You were beautiful in your silver and gold jewelry, and your linen, silk, and embroidered material. You ate the best foods. You were very, very beautiful. And you became the queen!


You became famous for your beauty. And all because I made you so lovely!’” The Lord my Master said these things.

The Lord says these things: You were happy that Jerusalem was destroyed. You clapped your hands and stamped your feet. You had fun insulting the land of Israel.


Lord, stop being angry at Jerusalem. Jerusalem is on your holy mountain. You do the right things, so stop being angry at Jerusalem. People all around us insult us and make fun of your people. This happens because we and our ancestors {\cf2\super [102]} sinned against you.


Why? Because you obey the laws of Omri. {\cf2\super [78]} \par You do all the \{bad\} things\par that Ahab’s family does.\par You follow their teachings.\par So I will let you be destroyed.\par People will whistle in amazement\par when they see your destroyed city.\par Then you will bear the shame\par that the other nations bring to you. {\cf2\super [79]} \par


Nineveh, you have been hurt badly, and nothing can heal your wound. Everyone who hears the news of your destruction claps his hands. They are all happy! Why? Because they all felt the pain you always caused!


Nineveh is so proud now. It is such a happy city. The people think they are safe. They think Nineveh is the greatest place in the world. But that city will be destroyed! It will be an empty place where only wild animals go to rest. People that pass that place will whistle and shake their heads \{when they see how badly the city was destroyed\}.
