The Lord sent groups of Babylonians, Arameans, Moabites, and Ammonites to fight against Jehoiakim. The Lord sent those groups to destroy Judah. This happened just like the Lord said. The Lord used his servants the prophets to say those things.


The Sabean people {\cf2\super [3]} attacked us and took your animals! Those people killed the other servants. I am the only person that escaped. So I came to tell you the news!”


While that messenger was still speaking, another messenger came. This third messenger said, “The Chaldeans sent three groups of soldiers. They attacked us and took the camels! They killed the servants. I am the only person that escaped. So I came to tell you the news!”


The evil person won’t be rich for long.\par His wealth won’t last.\par His crops won’t grow large.\par


God has given me to evil people.\par He let wicked people hurt me.\par


His steps won’t be strong and fast again.\par But he will walk slowly and be weak.\par His own evil plans will make him fall.\par


When the evil person has eaten all he wants,\par God will throw his burning anger\par against that person.\par God will rain punishment\par down on the evil person.\par


Bad people stop making trouble\par when they are in the grave.\par And people who are tired\par find rest in the grave.\par


Hungry people ate all his crops.\par Those hungry people took even\par the grain growing among the thorns.\par Greedy people took all they had.\par


Lord, you gave me only a short life. {\cf2\super [236]} \par My short life is nothing,\par compared to you.\par Every person’s life is only like a cloud\par \{that quickly disappears\}.\par No person lives forever! {\cf2\super [237]} \par \i (SELAH {\cf2\super [238]})\i0 \par


I will send Assyria to fight against the people that do evil things. I am angry at those people, and I will command Assyria to fight against them. Assyria will defeat them and Assyria will take their wealth from them. Israel will become like dirt for Assyria to trample (walk on) in the streets.


She (Babylon) gave herself much glory\par and rich living.\par Give her that much suffering and sadness.\par She says to herself, ‘I am a queen\par sitting \{on my throne\}.\par I am not a widow {\cf2\super [131]} ;\par I will never be sad.’\par
