At that time, the Lord caused Hadad the Edomite to become Solomon’s enemy. Hadad was from the family of the king of Edom.


God also caused another man to be an enemy against Solomon. This man was Rezon, son of Eliada. Rezon ran away from his master. His master was Hadadezer, king of Zobah.


The God of Israel made Pul want to go to war. Pul was the king of Assyria. He was also called Tiglath Pileser. He fought against the people from the family groups of Manasseh, Reuben, and Gad. He forced them to leave their homes and made them prisoners. Pul brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and near the Gozan River. Those family groups from Israel have lived in those places since that time until today.


During the first year that Cyrus {\cf2\super [458]} was king of Persia, the Lord caused Cyrus to make a special announcement. He did this so that the things the Lord promised through Jeremiah the prophet would really happen. Cyrus sent messengers to every place in his kingdom. They carried this message:


During the first year {\cf2\super [1]} that Cyrus was king of Persia, the Lord encouraged Cyrus to make an announcement. Cyrus put that announcement in writing and had it read every place in his kingdom. This happened so that the Lord’s message that was spoken through Jeremiah {\cf2\super [2]} would truly happen. This is the announcement:


Then the Lord All-Powerful will beat Assyria with a whip. In the past, the Lord defeated Midian at Raven Rock. {\cf2\super [123]} It will be the same when the Lord attacks Assyria. \{In the past, the Lord punished Egypt—\}he lifted the stick over the sea, {\cf2\super [124]} and led his people from Egypt. It will be the same when the Lord saves his people from Assyria.


I have seen something very terrible\par that will happen.\par I see traitors {\cf2\super [205]} turning against you.\par I see people taking your wealth.\par


\{The people think everything is fine.\par The people are saying,\}\par “Prepare the table!\par Eat and Drink!”\par \{At the same time\par the soldiers are saying,\}\par “Post the guard!\par Officers, get up\par and polish your shields!”\par


“I woke a person in the north. {\cf2\super [378]} \par He is coming from the east\par where the sun rises.\par He worships my name.\par A man that makes pots walks on wet clay.\par In the same way, this special man will trample (walk on) kings.”\par


These are the things the Lord says about Cyrus, {\cf2\super [400]} his chosen king: {\cf2\super [401]}


I am the Lord!\par I am the only God.\par There is no other God.\par I put your clothes on you, {\cf2\super [402]} \par but still you don’t know me.\par


And I am calling a man from the east. That man will be like an eagle. He will come from a faraway country, and he will do the things I decide to do. I am telling you that I will do this, and I will do it. I made him, and I will bring him!


I made all the kings from Zimri, Elam, and Media drink from the cup.


“Get your large and small shields ready.\par March out for battle.\par


Get the horses ready.\par Soldiers, get on your horses.\par Go to your places for battle.\par Put your helmets on.\par Sharpen your spears.\par Put your armor on.\par


Horse soldiers, charge into battle.\par Chariot drivers, drive fast.\par March on, brave soldiers.\par Soldiers from Cush and Put,\par carry your shields.\par Soldiers from Lydia,\par use your bows.\par


The Lord has opened up his storeroom\par and brought out the weapons of his anger.\par The Lord God All-Powerful\par brought out those weapons\par because he has work to do\par in the land of the Chaldean people.\par


A nation from the north will attack Babylon.\par That nation will make Babylon\par like an empty desert.\par No people will live there.\par Both men and animals\par will run away from there.”\par


Listen to what the Lord has planned\par to do to Babylon.\par Listen to what the Lord has decided\par to do to the Babylonian people.\par “I swear (promise), an enemy will drag away\par the young kids of Babylon’s flock (people)\par and Babylon will become\par an empty pasture.\par


I will bring many nations together\par from the north.\par This group of nations will get ready for war\par against Babylon.\par Babylon will be captured by people\par from the north.\par Those nations will shoot many arrows\par at Babylon.\par Those arrows will be like soldiers\par that don’t come back from war\par with their hands empty.\par


Lift up a flag against the walls of Babylon.\par Bring more guards.\par Put the watchmen in their places.\par Get ready for a secret attack.\par The Lord will do what he has planned.\par He will do what he said he would do\par against the people of Babylon.\par


But I will pay Babylon back.\par I will pay all the Babylonian people back.\par I will pay them back for all the bad things\par that they did to Zion. {\cf2\super [421]} \par I will pay them back so that you can see it, Judah.”\par The Lord said those things.\par


Babylon did terrible things to hurt us.\par Now I want those things\par to happen to Babylon.”\par


So the Lord says:\par “I will defend you, Judah.\par I will make sure\par that Babylon is punished.\par I will dry up Babylon’s sea.\par And I will make her water springs\par become dry.\par


That very same night, Belshazzar, king of the Babylonian people, was killed.


Beat your plows into swords.\par Make spears from your pruning hooks. {\cf2\super [29]} \par Let the weak man say,\par “I am a strong soldier.”\par


Announce this among the nations:\par Prepare for war!\par Wake up the strong men!\par Let all the men of war come near.\par Let them come up!\par


You will have broken my Agreement, so I will punish you. I will bring armies against you. You will go into your cities for safety. But I will cause diseases to spread among you. And your enemies will defeat you.


But the Lord will punish the nations that fought against Jerusalem. He will send a terrible disease against them. Their skin will begin to rot while the people are still alive. Their eyes will rot in their sockets and their tongues will rot in their mouths.


I will bring all the nations together to fight against Jerusalem. They will capture the city and destroy the houses. The women will be raped, and half of the people will be taken away as prisoners. But the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.
