Babylon, I set a trap for you.\par And you were caught before you knew it.\par You fought against the Lord,\par so you were found and captured.\par


“Call for the men that shoot arrows.\par Tell them to attack Babylon.\par Tell them to surround the city.\par Don’t let anyone escape.\par Pay her back for the bad things she has done.\par Do to her what she has done\par to other nations.\par Babylon did not respect the Lord.\par Babylon was very rude\par to the Holy One of Israel.\par So punish Babylon.\par


The Lord All-Powerful says:\par “The people of Israel and Judah are slaves.\par The enemy took them,\par and the enemy will not let Israel go.\par


I will bring many nations together\par from the north.\par This group of nations will get ready for war\par against Babylon.\par Babylon will be captured by people\par from the north.\par Those nations will shoot many arrows\par at Babylon.\par Those arrows will be like soldiers\par that don’t come back from war\par with their hands empty.\par


Babylon might grow\par until she touches the sky.\par Babylon might make her forts strong.\par But I will send people\par to fight against that city.\par And those people will destroy her.”\par The Lord said these things.\par


Jeremiah had written on a scroll {\cf2\super [431]} all the terrible things that would happen to Babylon. He had written all these things about Babylon.


But the vine was pulled up by the roots,\par and thrown down to the ground.\par The hot east wind blew and dried its fruit.\par The strong branches broke.\par And they were thrown into the fire.\par


\{Israel\} grows among his brothers.\par But a powerful east wind will come—\par the Lord’s wind will blow from the desert.\par Then \{Israel’s\} well will become dry.\par His spring of water will become dry.\par The wind will take every valuable thing\par from \{Israel’s\} treasure.\par


If a trumpet blows a warning, then the people will surely shake with fear. If trouble comes to a city, then the Lord caused it.


Why? Because hurting you\par is like hurting the pupil of God’s eye.\par


Saul fell to the ground. He heard a voice saying to him: “Saul, Saul! Why are you doing these bad things to me?”
