Jeremiah 5:6 - Easy To Read Version

6 They turned against God,\par so a lion from the forest will attack them.\par A wolf from the desert will kill them.\par A leopard is hiding near their cities.\par The leopard will tear to pieces\par any person that comes out of the city.\par This will happen because the people\par of Judah have sinned again and again.\par They have wandered away from the Lord\par many times.\par

Also, all the leaders of the priests and the leaders of the people of Judah sinned worse and became more unfaithful to the Lord. They followed the evil example of the other nations. Those leaders ruined the Lord’s temple. {\cf2\super [453]} The Lord had made the temple holy in Jerusalem.


Then Ezra the priest stood and said to those people, “You people have not been faithful to God. You have married foreign women. You have made Israel more guilty by doing that.


If I have any success and feel proud,\par you hunt me like a person hunts a lion.\par You again show your power against me.\par


You made darkness to be the night—\par the time when wild animals come out\par and roam around.\par


Wild pigs come and walk on your “vine.”\par Wild animals come and eat the leaves.\par


Your rulers are rebels and friends of thieves. All of your rulers demand bribes—they accept money for doing wrong things. All of your rulers take pay for cheating people. Your rulers don’t try to help the children that have no parents. And your rulers don’t listen to the needs of the women whose husbands are dead.”


Why? Because we have done many, many wrong things against our God.\par Our sins show we are wrong.\par We know we are guilty of doing these things.\par


“We know that those things are our fault.\par We are now suffering because of our sins.\par Lord, do something to help us for the good of your name.\par We admit that we left you many times.\par We have sinned against you.\par


Young lions’ (enemies) roar at Israel.\par The lions growl.\par Lions have destroyed the land of Israel.\par The cities of Israel have been burned.\par There are no people left in them.\par


This trouble is your own fault!\par The Lord your God\par was leading you the right way, {\cf2\super [10]} \par but you turned away from him.\par


You did bad things,\par and those bad things will only\par bring punishment to you.\par Trouble will come to you.\par And that trouble will teach you a lesson.\par Think about it!\par Then you will understand how bad it is\par to turn away from your God.\par It is wrong not to fear and respect me!”\par This message was from my Master,\par the Lord All-Powerful.\par


People of this generation, pay attention\par to the Lord’s message!\par


The Lord is like a dangerous lion\par leaving his cave.\par The Lord is angry!\par And that anger will hurt those people.\par Their country will be an empty desert.\par


You became friends with many nations.\par But those nations don’t care about you.\par Your ‘friends’ have forgotten you.\par I hurt you like an enemy.\par I punished you very hard.\par I did this because of your great guilt.\par I did this because of your many sins.\par


Israel and Judah, why are you yelling\par about your wound?\par Your wound is painful,\par and there is no cure for it.\par I, the Lord, did these things to you\par because of your great guilt.\par I did these things\par because of your many sins.\par


The Lord will be angry\par until he finishes punishing the people.\par He will be angry until he finishes\par the punishment he planned.\par When that day comes,\par you people of Judah will understand.\par


A lion has come out of his cave.\par A destroyer of nations has begun to march.\par He has left his home\par to destroy your land.\par Your towns will be destroyed.\par There will be no people left to live in them.\par


“Sometimes a lion will come from the thick bushes near the Jordan River. And that lion will go into the fields where people put their sheep and cattle. I am like that lion. I will go to Edom. And I will scare those people. I will make them run away. None of their young men will stop me. No one is like me. No one will challenge me. None of their shepherds (leaders) will stand up against me.”


The people of Judah went (lived)\par the wrong way.\par But why do those people of Jerusalem\par continue going the wrong way?\par They believe their own lies.\par They refuse to turn around and come back.\par


Even the birds in the sky\par know the right time to do things.\par The storks, doves, swifts, and thrushes\par know when it is time to fly to a new home.\par But my people don’t know what the Lord wants them to do.\par


Jerusalem’s enemies have won.\par Her enemies have been successful.\par This happened because the Lord\par punished her.\par He punished Jerusalem for her many sins.\par Her children have gone away.\par Their enemies captured them\par and took them away.\par


You built your mounds at the head of every road. Then you degraded your beauty. You used it to catch every man that walked by. You raised your skirt so they could see your legs, and then you were like a prostitute {\cf2\super [123]} with those men.


“The leaders in Jerusalem are like a wolf eating the animal it has caught. Those leaders attack and kill people just to get rich.


Again and again Oholibah was unfaithful to me. And then she remembered the love affair she had as a young girl in Egypt.


“The first animal looked like a lion, and it had wings like an eagle. I watched this animal. Then its wings were torn off. It was lifted from the ground so that it stood up on two feet like a man. And it was given the heart (mind) of a man.


“After that, I looked, and there in front of me was another animal. This animal looked like a leopard. {\cf2\super [73]} And the leopard had four wings on its back. The wings looked like a bird’s wings. This animal had four heads. It was given authority to rule.


Why? Because I will be like a lion to Ephraim.\par I will be like a young lion\par to the nation {\cf2\super [62]} of Judah.\par I—yes, I (the Lord)—will rip them to pieces.\par I will carry them away,\par And no person can save.\par


Their horses will be faster than leopards {\cf2\super [2]} and meaner than wolves {\cf2\super [3]} at sunset. Their horse soldiers will come from faraway places. They will attack their enemies quickly, like a hungry eagle swooping down from the sky.


Jerusalem’s leaders are like roaring lions. Her judges {\cf2\super [19]} are like hungry wolves that come in the evening \{to attack the sheep\}—and in the morning nothing is left.


And now you are doing the same thing that your fathers did. You sinful people, do you want the Lord to be even more angry against his people?


This animal looked like a leopard, with feet like a bear’s feet. It had a mouth like a lion’s mouth. The giant snake \{on the seashore\} gave the animal all of his power and his throne and great authority.
