19 The people of Judah will ask you,\par ‘Jeremiah, why has the Lord our God\par done this bad thing to us?’\par Give them this answer:\par ‘You people of Judah have left the Lord,\par and you have served foreign idols\par in your own land.\par You did those things, so now\par you will serve foreigners in a land\par that doesn’t belong to you.’”\par

You might ask yourself,\par “Why has this bad thing happened to me?”\par Those things happened because of your many sins.\par Because of your sins,\par your skirt was torn off\par and your shoes were taken away.\par They did this to embarrass you.\par


So I will throw you out of this country. I will force you to go to a foreign country. You will go to a land that you and your ancestors never knew. In that land you can serve false gods all you want to. I will not help you or show you any favors.’


You will lose the land I gave you.\par I will let your enemies take you\par to be their slaves.\par Why? Because I am very angry.\par My anger is like a hot fire,\par and you will be burned forever.”\par


“My people have done two evil things.\par They turned away from me\par (I am the spring of living water),\par and they dug their own water cisterns.\par (They turned to other gods.)\par But their cisterns are broken.\par Those cisterns can’t hold water.\par


“Have the people of Israel become slaves?\par Have they become like a person\par that was born a slave?\par Why did people take the wealth\par from the people of Israel?\par


But still, you say,\par ‘I am innocent.\par God is not angry with me.’\par So I will also judge you guilty \{of lying\}.\par Why? Because you say,\par ‘I have done nothing wrong.’\par


This message is from the Lord,\par “But Judah, when those terrible days come,\par I will not fully destroy you.\par


\{The Lord said,\}\par “Tell this message to the family of Jacob.\par Tell this message in the nation of Judah:\par


Is there a man that is wise enough to understand these things?\par Is there some person that has been taught by the Lord?\par Can anyone explain the Lord’s message?\par Why was the land ruined?\par Why was it made like an empty desert where no people go?\par


The Lord answered these questions. He said,\par “It is because the people of Judah quit following my teachings.\par I gave them my teachings,\par but they refused to listen to me.\par They did not follow my teachings.\par


Slaves have become our rulers.\par No person can save us from them.\par
