Then that person will confess to people.\par He will say,\par ‘I sinned.\par I changed good into bad.\par But God didn’t give me\par the punishment I deserved!\par


A good, honest person is safe. But a crooked person who cheats will be caught.


A person’s own foolishness will ruin his life. But he will blame the Lord.


The king’s family and the people\par of Dibon {\cf2\super [158]} \par are going to the places of worship {\cf2\super [159]} to cry.\par The people of Moab are crying\par for Nebo {\cf2\super [160]} and Medeba. {\cf2\super [161]} \par The people shaved their heads and beards\par \{to show they are sad\}.\par


This will happen because you have forgotten the God who saves you. You have not remembered that God is your place of safety.


You did not remember me.\par You did not even notice me!\par So, who were you worrying about?\par Who were you afraid of?\par Why did you lie?\par Look, I have been quiet for a long time—\par and you did not honor me.\par


Soldiers came to take things\par from every place in that empty land.\par The Lord used those armies\par to punish that land.\par People from one end of the land\par to the other were punished.\par No person was safe.\par


These are the things that will happen to you.\par This is your part in my plans.”\par


But my people have forgotten about me.\par They make offerings to worthless idols.\par My people stumble in the things they do.\par They stumble about in the old paths\par of their ancestors. {\cf2\super [153]} \par My people would rather walk\par along back roads and poor highways,\par than to follow me on the good roads.\par


A young woman doesn’t forget her jewelry.\par A bride doesn’t forget the sash for her dress.\par But my people have forgotten me\par too many times to count.\par


“Look up to the bare hilltops, Judah.\par Is there any place where you have not\par had sex with your lovers (false gods)?\par You have sat by the road waiting for lovers,\par like an Arab waiting in the desert.\par You made the land ‘dirty’!\par How? You did many bad things\par and you were unfaithful to me.\par


Those people will come back crying.\par But I will lead them and comfort them.\par I will lead those people by streams of water.\par I will lead them on an easy road,\par so that they will not stumble.\par I will lead them in that way\par because I am Israel’s father.\par And Ephraim {\cf2\super [250]} is my firstborn son.\par


“So, the Lord my Master said these things, ‘\{Jerusalem,\} you forgot me. You threw me away and left me behind. So now you must suffer for leaving me and living like a prostitute. {\cf2\super [190]} You must suffer for your wicked dreams.’”


“But some of the people will escape. Those survivors will run to the mountains. But those people won’t be happy. They will be sad for all their sins. They will cry and make sad noises like doves.


\{I gave food to the Israelites.\} They ate that food. They became full and satisfied. They became proud. And they forgot me!


Israel built kings’ houses.\par But it forgot its Maker!\par Now Judah builds fortresses. {\cf2\super [83]} \par But I will send a fire on Judah’s cities.\par And the fire will destroy its fortresses!”\par


Leaders of Jacob and rulers of Israel,\par listen to me!\par You hate the right way of living!\par If something is straight,\par then you make it crooked!\par


Then the Lord’s angel asked Balaam, “Why did you hit your donkey three times? I am the one that came to stop [285] you. But just in time, [286]


Being sorry like God wants makes a person change his heart and life. This leads a person to salvation, and we cannot be sorry for that. But the kind of sorrow the world has will bring death.
