Jeremiah 20:5 - Easy To Read Version

5 The people of Jerusalem worked hard to build things and become wealthy. But I will give all those things to their enemies. The king in Jerusalem has many treasures. But I will give all those treasures to the enemy. The enemy will take those things and carry them away to the country of Babylon.

In the spring, King Nebuchadnezzar sent some servants to get Jehoiachin. They brought Jehoiachin and some valuable treasures from the Lord’s temple {\cf2\super [452]} to Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar chose Zedekiah to be the new king of Judah and Jerusalem. Zedekiah was one of Jehoiachin’s relatives.


’The time is coming when all the things in your house and all the things your ancestors {\cf2\super [370]} have saved until today will be carried away to Babylon. Nothing will be left!’ The Lord All-Powerful said this.


Soldiers came to take things\par from every place in that empty land.\par The Lord used those armies\par to punish that land.\par People from one end of the land\par to the other were punished.\par No person was safe.\par


The people of Judah have many treasures.\par I will give those riches to other people.\par Those other people will not have to buy them.\par \{I will give those riches to them.\}\par Why? Because Judah has many sins.\par People sinned in every part of Judah\par


They remember those things\par on the mountains in the open country.\par The people of Judah have many treasures.\par I will give those things to other people.\par People will destroy all the high places {\cf2\super [137]} \par in your country.\par You worshiped at those places.\par And that was a sin.\par


That terrible false god Baal has eaten\par everything our fathers owned.\par This has happened since we were children.\par That terrible false god took\par our fathers’ sheep and cattle,\par and their sons and daughters.\par


“And now, the enemy has surrounded the city. They are building ramps, so that they can get over the walls of Jerusalem and capture it. By using their swords, and hunger, and terrible sicknesses, the Babylonian army will defeat the city of Jerusalem. The Babylonian army is attacking the city now. Lord, you said this would happen—and now you see it is happening.


And on the ninth day of the fourth month in Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the wall of Jerusalem was broken through.


The army of Babylon set fire to the king’s house and the houses of the people of Jerusalem. And they broke down the walls of Jerusalem.


Disaster follows disaster!\par The whole country is destroyed!\par Suddenly my tents are destroyed!\par My curtains are torn down!\par


The enemy stretched out his hand.\par He took all of her nice things.\par In fact, she saw the foreign nations\par go inside her temple.\par And Lord, you said those people\par could not join in our assembly!\par


Jerusalem thinks back.\par Jerusalem remembers the time\par when she was hurt\par and when she lost her home.\par She remembers all the nice things\par that she had in the past.\par She remembers those nice things\par that she had in the old days.\par She remembers when her people\par were captured by the enemy.\par She remembers when there was no person\par to help her.\par When her enemies saw her, they laughed.\par They laughed because she was destroyed.\par


The kings of the earth could not believe\par what had happened.\par The people of the world could not believe\par what had happened.\par They could not believe\par that enemies would be able to come\par through the city gates of Jerusalem.\par


The prophets in Jerusalem are making evil plans. They are like a lion—it roars when it begins to eat the animal it caught. Those prophets have destroyed many lives. They have taken many valuable things. They caused many women to become widows {\cf2\super [176]} in Jerusalem.


The Lord allowed Nebuchadnezzar to defeat Jehoiakim king of Judah. Nebuchadnezzar took all of the dishes and other things from God’s temple. Nebuchadnezzar carried those things to Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar put those things in the temple of his idol gods.


\{Israel\} grows among his brothers.\par But a powerful east wind will come—\par the Lord’s wind will blow from the desert.\par Then \{Israel’s\} well will become dry.\par His spring of water will become dry.\par The wind will take every valuable thing\par from \{Israel’s\} treasure.\par
