11 “So, Jeremiah, say to the people of Judah and the people that live in Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am preparing troubles for you right now. I am making plans against you. So stop doing the evil things that you are doing. Each person must change and start doing good things!’

So let’s go down and confuse their language. Then they will not understand each other.”


Micaiah finished his story. Then he said, “So this is what has happened here. The Lord has caused your prophets to lie to you. The Lord himself has decided that great trouble should come to you.”


The Lord used every prophet and every seer [205] to warn Israel and Judah. The Lord said, “Turn away from the evil things you do! Obey my commands and laws. Follow all the Law that I gave to your ancestors. [206] I used my servants the prophets to give this law to you.”


King Josiah said, “Go and ask the Lord what we should do. Ask the Lord for me, for the people, and for all Judah. Ask about the words of this book that was found. The Lord is angry at us. Why? Because our ancestors [272] did not listen to the words of this book. They did not obey all the commands that were written for us!”


Then the king of Aram said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.”


Now, I will tell you what I will do to my field of grapes:\par


The good people are all gone,\par and no one even noticed.\par The good people have gathered together.\par But they don’t understand why.\par They don’t know that trouble is coming,\par and that they have been gathered together for protection\}.\par


So the Lord says: “I will soon make something terrible happen to the people of Judah. They will not be able to escape! They will be sorry. And they will cry to me for help. But I will not listen to them.


Before the Lord showed me that the people were against me, I was like a gentle lamb waiting to be butchered. I did not understand that they were against me. They were saying these things about me: “Let us destroy the tree and its fruit! Let us kill him! Then people will forget him.”


Then the enemies of Jeremiah said, “Come, let us make plans against Jeremiah. Surely the teaching of the law by the priest will not be lost. And the advice from the wise men will still be with us. We will still have the words of the prophets. So let us tell lies about him. That will ruin him. We will not pay attention to anything he says.”


“This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel says: ‘I said I would bring many disasters to Jerusalem and the villages around it. I will soon make those things happen. Why? Because the people are very stubborn—they refused to listen and obey me.’”


Say to those people with you, ‘King of Judah and people of Jerusalem, listen to this message from the Lord! This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of the people of Israel, says: I will soon make a terrible thing happen to this place! Every person that hears about it will be amazed and full of fear.


This is the message that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the people of Jerusalem:


Those prophets said, “Change your lives! Stop doing those bad things! If you change, then you can return to the land which the Lord gave you and your ancestors {\cf2\super [200]} long ago. He gave you this land to live in forever.


You people change your lives! You must start doing good things! You must obey the Lord your God. If you do that, then the Lord will change his mind. The Lord will not do the bad things he told you about.


Maybe they will listen and obey my message. Maybe they will stop living such evil lives. If they change, then I might change my mind about my plans to punish them. I am planning this punishment because of many bad things those people have done.


“If a man divorces his wife,\par and she leaves him\par and marries another man,\par can that man come back to his wife again?\par No! If that man went back to that woman, {\cf2\super [14]} \par then that land would become ‘dirty.’\par Judah, you acted like a prostitute\par with many lovers (false gods).\par And now you want to come back to me!”\par This message was from the Lord.\par


\{The Lord also said,\}\par “People of Israel, you are unfaithful to me.\par But come back to me!\par Come back and I will forgive {\cf2\super [19]} you\par for being unfaithful to me.”\par


I sent my servants the prophets to you people of Israel and Judah. I sent them to you again and again. Those prophets said to you, ‘Each of you people of Israel and Judah must stop doing evil things. You must be good. Don’t follow other gods. Don’t worship or serve them. If you obey me, then you will live in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.’ But you people have not paid attention to my message.


Maybe the family of Judah will hear what I am planning to do to them. And maybe they will stop doing bad things. If they will do that, I will forgive them for the bad sins they have done.”


Perhaps those people will ask the Lord to help them. Perhaps each person will stop doing bad things. The Lord has announced that he is very angry with those people.”


This message is from the Lord.\par “Israel, if you want to come back,\par then come back to me.\par Throw away your idols.\par Don’t wander away from me.\par


People of Jerusalem, wash the evil\par from your hearts.\par Make your hearts pure so you can be saved.\par Don’t continue making evil plans.\par


I looked at the earth.\par The earth was empty;\par nothing was on the earth.\par I looked at the sky.\par and its light was gone. {\cf2\super [29]} \par


Raise the signal flag toward Zion. {\cf2\super [21]} \par Run for your lives!\par Don’t wait!\par Do this because I am bringing disaster from the north. {\cf2\super [22]} \par I am bringing terrible destruction.”\par


Sharpen the arrows!\par Get your shields!\par The Lord stirred up the kings\par of the Medes. {\cf2\super [418]} \par He has stirred them up\par because he wants to destroy Babylon.\par The Lord will give the people of Babylon\par the punishment that they deserve.\par The army from Babylon destroyed\par the Lord’s temple {\cf2\super [419]} in Jerusalem.\par So the Lord will give them\par the punishment they should have.\par


The Lord is the God of the people of Israel. This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: ‘Change your lives and do good things. If you do this, I will let you live in this place. {\cf2\super [51]}


The Lord my Master says, “I don’t want bad people to die. I want them to change their lives so they can live!


But every person and every animal must be covered with a special cloth \{to show he is sad\}. People must cry loudly to God. Every person must change his life and stop doing bad things.


That is why the Lord says these things.\par “Look, I am planning trouble\par against this family.\par You will not be able to save yourselves. {\cf2\super [30]} \par You will stop being proud.\par Why? Because bad times are coming.\par


So you must tell the people these things. The Lord says, “Come back to me and I will come back to you.” The Lord All-Powerful said these things.


I began telling people that they should change their hearts and lives and turn back to God. I told the people to do things that show that they really changed their hearts. I told these things first to people in Damascus. Then I went to Jerusalem and to every part of Judea and told these things to the people there. I also went to the non-Jewish people.


Some of you say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to some city. We will stay there a year, do business, and make money.” Listen! Think about this:


You rich people, listen! Cry and be very sad because much trouble will come to you.
