13 “People of Judah, you have many idols—there are as many idols as there are towns in Judah. You have built many altars for worshiping that disgusting god Baal {\cf2\super [96]} —there are as many altars as there are streets in Jerusalem.

In the past, King Solomon built some high places [292] on Destroyer Hill near Jerusalem. The high places were on the south side of that hill. King Solomon built one of those places of worship to honor Ashtoreth, that horrible thing the people of Sidon worship. King Solomon also built one to honor Chemosh, that horrible thing the people of Moab worship. And King Solomon built one high place to honor Milcom, that horrible thing the Ammonite people worship. But King Josiah defiled (ruined) all those places of worship.


In every town in Judah Ahaz made high places {\cf2\super [330]} for burning incense {\cf2\super [331]} to worship other gods. Ahaz made the Lord God that his ancestors {\cf2\super [332]} obeyed very angry.


Your land is full of statues that people worship. The people made those idols {\cf2\super [21]} and the people worship them.


The Lord All-Powerful planted you.\par And he said that disaster will come to you.\par Why? Because the family of Israel\par and the family of Judah\par have done evil things.\par They offered sacrifices to Baal.” {\cf2\super [98]} \par And that made me angry!\par


“The sins of the people of Judah\par are written down in a place where they can’t be erased.\par Those sins were cut into stone\par with an iron pen.\par Their sins were cut into stone\par with a diamond tipped pen. {\cf2\super [134]} \par And that stone is their heart.\par Those sins were cut\par into the horns of their altars. {\cf2\super [135]} \par


But my people have forgotten about me.\par They make offerings to worthless idols.\par My people stumble in the things they do.\par They stumble about in the old paths\par of their ancestors. {\cf2\super [153]} \par My people would rather walk\par along back roads and poor highways,\par than to follow me on the good roads.\par


I will do these things because the people of Judah quit following me. They have made this a place for foreign gods. The people of Judah have burned sacrifices in this place to other gods. The people did not worship those gods long ago. Their ancestors {\cf2\super [157]} did not worship those gods. These are new gods from other countries. The kings of Judah filled this place with the blood of the innocent children.


The kings of Judah built high places {\cf2\super [158]} for the god Baal. {\cf2\super [159]} They use those places to burn their sons in the fire. They burned their sons as burnt offerings to the god Baal. I did not tell them to do that. I did not ask you to offer your sons as sacrifices. I never even thought of such a thing.


Let those idols come and save you!\par Where are the idols\par that you have made for yourselves?\par Let’s see if those idols come\par and save you when you are in trouble.\par Judah, you have as many idols as cities!\par


That terrible false god Baal has eaten\par everything our fathers owned.\par This has happened since we were children.\par That terrible false god took\par our fathers’ sheep and cattle,\par and their sons and daughters.\par


Let us lie down in our shame.\par Let our shame cover us like a blanket.\par We have sinned against the Lord our God.\par We and our fathers have sinned.\par We have not obeyed the Lord our God\par


“In the Valley of Ben Hinnom, {\cf2\super [272]} those people built high places {\cf2\super [273]} to the false god Baal. {\cf2\super [274]} They built those worship places so that they could burn their sons and daughters as child sacrifices. I never commanded them to do such a terrible thing. I never even thought the people of Judah would do such a terrible thing.


Jeremiah said to those people, “The Lord remembered that you made sacrifices in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. You and your ancestors, {\cf2\super [359]} your kings, your officials, and the people of the land did that. The Lord remembered what you had done, and thought about that.


But those people didn’t listen to the prophets. They didn’t pay attention to those prophets. Those people didn’t stop doing wicked things. They didn’t stop making sacrifices to other gods.


I will stop Moab from making burnt offerings on the high places. {\cf2\super [388]} I will stop them from making sacrifices to their gods.” The Lord said those things.\par


Will you steal and murder? Will you do the sin of adultery {\cf2\super [56]} ? Will you falsely accuse other people? Will you worship the false god Baal {\cf2\super [57]} and follow other gods that you have not known?


“After all those things you made that mound \{for worshiping that false god\}. You built those places for worshiping false gods on every street corner.


Israel is like a vine that grows plenty of fruit.\par But as Israel got more and more \{things\}\par he built more and more altars\par \{to honor false gods\}.\par His land became better and better,\par so he put up better and better stones\par \{to honor false gods\}.\par


But the people in Gilead {\cf2\super [138]} have sinned. There are many terrible idols in that place. The people offer sacrifices to bulls at Gilgal. Those people have many altars. {\cf2\super [139]} There are rows and rows of altars—like the rows of dirt in a plowed field.


At the time I found Israel, they were like fresh grapes in the desert. They were like the first figs on a fig tree at the beginning of the season. But then they came to Baal-Peor. {\cf2\super [92]} And they changed—and I had to cut them off \{(destroy them) like rotten fruit. {\cf2\super [93]} They became like the terrible things \{(false gods) that they loved.
