The people of Judah left me and have burned incense [274] to other gods. They made me very angry. They made many idols. [275] That is why I will show my anger against this place. My anger will be like a fire that can’t be stopped!’


Azariah went to meet Asa. Azariah said, “Listen to me Asa, and all you people of Judah and Benjamin! The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you look for the Lord, you will find him. But if you leave him, he will leave you.


Ahaz followed the bad example of the kings of Israel. He used molds to make idols to worship the Baal gods.


I will do this because the people left me and burned incense {\cf2\super [433]} to other gods. Those people made me angry because of all the bad things they have done. So I will pour out my anger on this place. Like a hot burning fire, my anger will not be put out!’


“But if you do not obey my laws and commands that I gave you, and if you worship other gods and serve them,


Your land is full of statues that people worship. The people made those idols {\cf2\super [21]} and the people worship them.


The kings of Assyria have burned the gods of those nations. But those were not real gods. They were only wood and stone—statues that men made. That is why the kings of Assyria could destroy them.


Then that man uses the tree to burn in his fire. The man cuts the tree into small pieces of wood. And he uses the wood to cook and keep him warm. The man starts a fire with some of the wood and bakes his bread. But the man still uses part of that wood to make a god—and the man worships that god! That god is a statue that the man made—but the man bows down before the statue!


Those people are in front of me always making me angry. Those people offer sacrifices {\cf2\super [466]} and burn incense {\cf2\super [467]} in their special gardens. {\cf2\super [468]}


Those idols are worth nothing.\par They are something to make fun of.\par In the time of judgment,\par those idols will be destroyed.\par


The customs of other people\par are worth nothing.\par Their idols are nothing but wood\par from the forest.\par Their idols are made by a worker\par with his chisel.\par


The people in the towns of Judah and in the city of Jerusalem will go and pray to their idols for help. Those people burn incense {\cf2\super [95]} to those idols. But those idols will not be able to help the people of Judah when that terrible time comes.


The Lord All-Powerful planted you.\par And he said that disaster will come to you.\par Why? Because the family of Israel\par and the family of Judah\par have done evil things.\par They offered sacrifices to Baal.” {\cf2\super [98]} \par And that made me angry!\par


Jerusalem, you left me.”\par This message is from the Lord.\par “Again and again you left me!\par So I will punish and destroy you.\par I am tired of holding back your punishment.\par


You must say these things to those people: ‘Terrible things will happen to you because your ancestors {\cf2\super [131]} quit following me.’ This message is from the Lord. ‘They quit following me and began to follow and serve other gods. They worshiped those other gods. Your ancestors left me and `quit obeying my law.


Lord, you are the hope of Israel.\par Lord, you are like a spring of living water.\par If a person quits following the Lord,\par then his life will be very short. {\cf2\super [139]} \par


But my people have forgotten about me.\par They make offerings to worthless idols.\par My people stumble in the things they do.\par They stumble about in the old paths\par of their ancestors. {\cf2\super [153]} \par My people would rather walk\par along back roads and poor highways,\par than to follow me on the good roads.\par


I will do these things because the people of Judah quit following me. They have made this a place for foreign gods. The people of Judah have burned sacrifices in this place to other gods. The people did not worship those gods long ago. Their ancestors {\cf2\super [157]} did not worship those gods. These are new gods from other countries. The kings of Judah filled this place with the blood of the innocent children.


“My people have done two evil things.\par They turned away from me\par (I am the spring of living water),\par and they dug their own water cisterns.\par (They turned to other gods.)\par But their cisterns are broken.\par Those cisterns can’t hold water.\par


This trouble is your own fault!\par The Lord your God\par was leading you the right way, {\cf2\super [10]} \par but you turned away from him.\par


You did bad things,\par and those bad things will only\par bring punishment to you.\par Trouble will come to you.\par And that trouble will teach you a lesson.\par Think about it!\par Then you will understand how bad it is\par to turn away from your God.\par It is wrong not to fear and respect me!”\par This message was from my Master,\par the Lord All-Powerful.\par


Let those idols come and save you!\par Where are the idols\par that you have made for yourselves?\par Let’s see if those idols come\par and save you when you are in trouble.\par Judah, you have as many idols as cities!\par


It is a stronger wind than that,\par and it comes from me.\par Now, I will announce my judgment against the people of Judah.”\par


So the people in the land will cry\par for the dead people.\par The sky will grow dark.\par I have spoken and will not change.\par I have made a decision\par and I will not change my mind.”\par


We promised to make sacrifices to the Queen of Heaven. {\cf2\super [357]} And we will do everything we promised. We will offer sacrifices and pour out drink offerings in worship to her. We did that in the past. And our ancestors, our kings, and our officials did that in the past. All of us did those things in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At the time we worshiped the Queen of Heaven, we had plenty of food. We were successful. Nothing bad happened to us.


Should I punish the people of Judah\par for doing these things?”\par This message is from the Lord.\par “You know that I should punish a nation\par such as this.\par I should give them the punishment\par that they deserve.”\par

But people are so stupid.\par They don’t understand what God has done.\par Skilled workers make statues of false gods.\par Those statues are only false gods.\par They show how foolish that worker is.\par Those statues are not alive.\par


I know you see what those people are doing in the towns of Judah. You can see what they are doing in the streets of the city of Jerusalem.


This is what the people of Judah are doing: The children gather wood. The fathers use the wood to make a fire. The women make the dough and make cakes of bread to offer to the Queen of Heaven. {\cf2\super [62]} Those people of Judah pour out drink offerings to worship other gods. They do this to make me angry.


Will you steal and murder? Will you do the sin of adultery {\cf2\super [56]} ? Will you falsely accuse other people? Will you worship the false god Baal {\cf2\super [57]} and follow other gods that you have not known?


Then you took the beautiful cloth and made clothes for those statues. You took the perfume and incense I gave you, and you put it in front of those idols.


“‘I am the Lord. I said your punishment would come, and I will make it happen. I won’t hold back the punishment. I won’t feel sorry for you. I will punish you for the bad things you did.’ The Lord my Master said those things.”


But the more I {\cf2\super [114]} called the Israelites,\par the more the Israelites left me.\par The Israelites gave sacrifices to the Baals. {\cf2\super [115]} \par They burned incense {\cf2\super [116]} to the idols. {\cf2\super [117]} \par


The Lord calls loudly to his army.\par His camp is very large.\par That army obeys his commands.\par That army is very powerful.\par The Lord’s special day\par is a great and terrible day.\par No person can stop it.\par


So the people made an idol that looked like a calf. Then they brought sacrifices (gifts) to it. The people were very happy with what they had made with their own hands!


“If you do evil and turn away from the Lord, then he will make bad things happen to you. You will have frustration and trouble in everything you do. He will continue to do this until you are quickly and completely destroyed. He will do this because you turned away from him and left him.


The Lord said to Moses, “You will die soon. And after you have gone to be with your ancestors, [205] these people will not continue to be faithful to me. They will break the Agreement I made with them. They will leave me and begin worshiping other gods—the false gods of the land where they are going.


But you will leave the Lord and serve other gods. And the Lord will cause terrible things to happen to you. The Lord will destroy you. The Lord God has been good to you, but if you turn against him he will destroy you.”


The other people \{on the earth\} were not killed by these bad things. But these people still did not change their hearts and lives and turn away from the things they had made with their own hands. They did not stop worshiping demons {\cf2\super [72]} and idols {\cf2\super [73]} made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—things that cannot see or hear or walk.
