Why did you run away without telling me? If you had told me, I would have given you a party. There would have been singing and dancing with music.

I am 80 years old! I am too old to tell which is bad and which is good. I am too old to taste the things I eat or drink. I am too old to hear any more the voices of men and women that sing. Why should you want to be bothered with me?

Why? Because the bad people\par stopped obeying God.\par And those bad people didn’t care\par about doing what God wants.\par

Bad people don’t understand the good things the Lord does.\par They don’t see the good things God does.\par No, they don’t understand;\par they only try to destroy.\par

But look! The people are happy now. The people are rejoicing. \{The people are saying\}:

People have stopped showing their joy. All the happy sounds have stopped. The happy music from the drums and harps has ended.

\{God says,\} “Look at Ariel! {\cf2\super [265]} Ariel, the city where David camped. Her holidays have continued year after year.

Those people say, “We wish God would hurry and do the things he plans to do. Then we would know what will happen. We wish the Lord’s plan would happen soon. Then we would know what his plan is.”

They come and say,\par “I will drink some wine.\par I will drink some beer.\par I will do the same thing tomorrow.\par Only, I will drink even more.”\par

So I will stop the sound of your happy songs. People won’t hear your harps any more.

No, you did not become humble. Instead, you have turned against the Lord of heaven. You ordered the drinking cups from the Lord’s temple to be brought to you. Then you and your royal officials, your wives, and your women servants {\cf2\super [61]} drank wine from those cups. You gave praise to the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone. Those are not really gods, they can’t see, or hear, or understand anything. But you did not give honor to the God who has the power over your life and everything you do.

Jesus said, “There was a rich man that always dressed in the finest clothes. He was so rich that he was able to enjoy all the best things every day.

It is the same as with non-living things that make sounds—like a flute or a harp. If the different musical notes are not made clear, then you can’t understand what song is being played. Each note must be played clearly for you to be able to understand the tune.

But you must honor the Lord. You must truly serve the Lord with all your heart. Remember the wonderful things he did for you!
