31 “The people from the family of Judah that have escaped and are left \{alive\} will again begin to grow. \{These people will be like plants that\} send their roots deep into the ground and produce fruit above the ground.

You prepared the ground for the “vine.”\par You helped its roots to grow strong.\par Soon the “vine” spread throughout\par the land.\par


Even when they are old,\par they will continue producing fruit\par like young, healthy trees.\par


\{This is true,\} but the Lord All-Powerful did allow a few people to continue living. We were not completely destroyed like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [6]}


At that time, my Master (God) will again reach out and take his people that are left. This will be the second time God has done this. \{(These are God’s people that are left in countries like Assyria, North Egypt, South Egypt, Ethiopia, Elam, Babylonia, Hamath, and all the faraway countries around the world.)


People will come \{to me\}.\par Those people will help Jacob \{to be strong\}\par like a plant with good roots.\par Those people will cause Israel to grow\par like a plant beginning to bloom.\par Then the land will be filled\par with \{the children of Israel\}\par like fruit from plants.”\par


The commander’s master, the king of Assyria, has sent him to say bad things about the living God. Maybe the Lord your God will hear all those things. Maybe the Lord will prove the enemy is wrong! So pray for the people that are still left alive.”


At that time, the Lord’s plant (Judah) will be very beautiful and great. The people still living in Israel will be very proud of the things the land grows.


But a tenth of the people will be allowed to stay in the land. These people will return \{to the Lord\} even though they were to be destroyed. These people will be like an oak tree. When the tree is chopped down, a stump is left. This stump (the people remaining) is a very special seed.


I will keep some of the people of Jacob (Israel). Some of the people of Judah will get my mountain. My servants will live there. I will choose the people that will live there.


People in those places\par will sing songs of praise.\par And there will be the sound of laughter.\par I will give them many children.\par Israel and Judah will not be small.\par I will bring honor to them.\par No person will look down on them.\par


The Lord says:\par “Be happy and sing for Jacob {\cf2\super [248]} !\par Shout for Israel,\par the greatest of the nations!\par Sing your praises and shout:\par ‘The Lord saved his people! {\cf2\super [249]} \par He has saved the people that are left alive\par from the nation of Israel.’\par


Some people of Judah will escape being killed by the sword. They will come back to Judah from Egypt. But there will be very few people of Judah that escape. Then those survivors {\cf2\super [362]} of Judah that came to live in Egypt will know whose word will come true. They will know whether my word or their word came true.


“But some of the people will escape. Those survivors will run to the mountains. But those people won’t be happy. They will be sad for all their sins. They will cry and make sad noises like doves.


It is the same now. There are a few people that God has chosen by his grace (kindness).


And Isaiah cries out about Israel {\cf2\super [91]} :
