1 Look at Samaria!\par The drunk people of Ephraim\par are proud of that city.\par That city sits on a hill\par with a rich valley around it.\par The people of Samaria think their city\par is a beautiful crown of flowers.\par But they are drunk with wine.\par And this “Beautiful Crown”\par is just a dying plant.\par

Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria came to fight against Israel. This was during the time that Pekah was king of Israel. Tiglath Pileser captured Ijon, Abel Bethmaacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, Galilee, and all the area of Naphtali. Tiglath Pileser took the people from these places as prisoners to Assyria.


But now those leaders are drunk. The priests and prophets are all drunk with wine and beer. They stumble and fall down. The prophets are drunk when they see their dreams. The judges are drunk when they make their decisions.


You people rise early in the morning and go looking for beer to drink. You stay awake late at night, becoming drunk with wine.


Those people are famous for drinking wine. They are champions at mixing drinks.


\{Why?\} Because before the boy learns to say, ‘Mama’ and ‘Daddy,’ God will take all the wealth and riches from Damascus {\cf2\super [95]} and Samaria, {\cf2\super [96]} and God will give those things to the king of Assyria. {\cf2\super [97]} ”


So the Lord will find people to fight against Israel. The Lord will bring Rezin’s {\cf2\super [109]} enemies against them.


My Lord gave a command against the people of Jacob (Israel). That command against Israel will be obeyed.


Then every person in Ephraim (Israel), even the leaders in Samaria, will know that God \{punished them\}.


“Sexual sins, strong drink, and new wine will ruin a person’s ability to think straight.


Israel’s pride is a witness against them. {\cf2\super [55]} So Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their sin. But Judah will also stumble with them.


Ephraim {\cf2\super [60]} will become empty\par at the time of punishment.\par I (God) warn the families of Israel\par that those things really will happen.\par


I have seen a terrible thing\par in the nation {\cf2\super [67]} of Israel.\par Ephraim {\cf2\super [68]} was unfaithful to God.\par Israel is dirty with sin.\par


On Our King’s Day,\par \{they make the fire hotter\}\par \{they give their drinking parties.\}\par The leaders become sick from the heat of wine.\par So the kings join hands with people\par that laugh at God.\par


And I will also destroy the {great cities that} make you proud. The skies will not give rain, and the earth will not produce crops. [444]


“But you made the Nazirites drink wine. You told the prophets not to prophesy.


They take clothes from poor people, and then they sit on those clothes while they worship at their altars. {\cf2\super [38]} They loaned money to poor people, and then took their clothes as collateral. {\cf2\super [39]} They make people pay fines, and then they use that money to buy wine for themselves to drink in the temple of their God.


Listen to me, you cows of Bashan {\cf2\super [48]} on Samaria’s mountain. You hurt poor people. You crush those poor people. You tell your husbands, {\cf2\super [49]} “Bring us something to drink!”


Oh, it will be very bad for you people taking it easy in Zion, {\cf2\super [75]} \par and for you people who feel so safe on Mount Samaria.\par You are “important” leaders\par of the most important nation!\par The “House of Israel”\par comes to you \{for advice\}!\par


\{But now, you enjoy all the comforts.\}\par You lie on ivory beds,\par and stretch out on your couches.\par You eat tender young lambs from the flock,\par and young calves from the stable.\par


You drink wine in fancy cups. {\cf2\super [79]} \par You use the best perfumes.\par And you are not even upset that Joseph’s family is being destroyed.\par


The Lord my Master used his own name and made a promise. The Lord God All-Powerful made this promise:
