Joseph was using an interpreter to talk to his brothers. So the brothers did not know that Joseph understood their language. But Joseph heard and understood everything they said.


That night the brothers stopped at a place to spend the night. One of the brothers opened his sack to get some grain for his donkey. And there in the sack, he saw his money!


Joseph was the governor of Egypt at the time. And Joseph was the man who checked the sale of grain to people who came to Egypt. So, Joseph’s brothers came to him and bowed before him.


“The land might become very dry and no food will grow on it. Or maybe a great sickness will spread among the people. Maybe all of the food that is growing will be destroyed by insects. Or your people might be attacked in some of their cities by their enemies. Or many of your people might become sick.


In Ahaz’s troubles, he sinned worse and became more unfaithful to the Lord.


“There might be a famine {\cf2\super [107]} in the land, or terrible sicknesses, or disease in the crops, or mildew, or locusts, or grasshoppers. Or if enemies attack the people of Israel in their cities, or if there is any kind of sickness in Israel,


“People that don’t care about God\par are always bitter.\par Even when God punishes them,\par they refuse to pray to God for help.\par


You will enjoy the things you work for.\par You will be happy,\par and good things will happen to you.\par


God gave their crops to the grasshoppers,\par and their other plants to the locusts.\par


Look, my Master has a person\par that is strong and brave.\par That person will come into the country\par like a storm of hail and rain.\par He will come like a storm into the country.\par He will be like a powerful river of water\par flooding the country.\par He will throw that crown (Samaria)\par down to the ground.\par


The people in the cities had no power.\par Those people were scared\par and confused.\par They were about to be cut down\par like grass and plants in the field.\par They were like grass growing\par on the housetops,\par dying before it grows tall.\par


So the Lord became angry at them. The Lord caused powerful wars against them. It was like the people of Israel had fire all around them. But they did not know what was happening. It was like they were burning. But they did not try to understand the things that were happening.


The Lord made a promise.\par The Lord used his own power as proof.\par And the Lord will use his power\par to keep that promise.\par


God will punish the people, but they will not stop sinning. They will not return to him. They will not follow the Lord All-Powerful.


That terrible false god Baal has eaten\par everything our fathers owned.\par This has happened since we were children.\par That terrible false god took\par our fathers’ sheep and cattle,\par and their sons and daughters.\par


Lord, I know that you want people\par to be loyal to you.\par You hit the people of Judah,\par but they did not feel any pain.\par You destroyed them,\par but they refused to learn their lesson.\par They became very stubborn.\par They refused to be sorry\par for the bad things they did.\par


“\{I did many things to try to make you come to me.\} I didn’t give you any food to eat. {\cf2\super [53]} There was no food in any of your cities. But you didn’t come back to me.” The Lord said those things.


\{The Lord says,\} “I gave the command for the land and the mountains to be dry. The grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and everything the earth produces will all be ruined! {\cf2\super [4]} All the people and all the animals will become weak.”


You have planted many seeds, but you have gathered only a few crops. You have food to eat, but not enough to get full. You have something to drink, but not enough to get drunk. You have some clothes to wear, but not enough to keep warm. You earn a little money, but \{you don’t know where it all goes\}. It’s like there is a hole in your pocket!’ {\cf2\super [2]} ”


The Lord All-Powerful says, “You people look for a big harvest. But when you go to gather the crop, there is only a little grain. So you bring that grain home. And then I \{send a wind that\} blows it all away! Why are these things happening? Why? Because my house is still in ruins while each of you runs home to take care of his own house.


People wanted 20 measures of grain, but there were only 10 measures of grain in the pile. People wanted to get 50 jars of wine from the wine vat, but there were only 20!


I will not let pests destroy your crops. Your grapevines will all produce grapes.” The Lord All-Powerful said these things.


The Lord will punish you with diseases, fever, and swelling. The Lord will send you terrible heat and you will have no rain. Your crops will die from the heat and disease. [182] All these bad things will happen until you are destroyed!


I have given her time to change her heart and turn away from her sin. But she does not want to change.
