Joseph came to his brothers. They attacked him and tore off his long and beautiful coat.


While Joseph was in the well, the brothers sat down to eat. Then they looked and saw a group of traders [226] traveling from Gilead to Egypt. Their camels were carrying many different spices and riches.


They said to each other, “We are being punished for the bad thing we did to our younger brother Joseph. We saw the trouble he was in. He begged us to save him. But we refused to listen. So now we are in trouble.”


I did nothing wrong,\par but those people tried to trap me.\par For no reason at all,\par they tried to trap me.\par


The Lord lifted me out of the grave. {\cf2\super [246]} \par He lifted me from that muddy place. {\cf2\super [247]} \par He picked me up,\par put me on solid ground\par and kept my feet from slipping.\par


You put me in that hole in the ground.\par Yes, you put me in that dark place.\par


My friends have left me.\par They all avoid me like a person\par no one wants to touch.\par I am locked in the house\par and I can’t go out.\par


So those officials took Jeremiah and put him into Malkijah’s cistern. {\cf2\super [324]} (Malkijah was the king’s son.) That cistern was in the temple yard where the king’s guard stayed. Those officials used ropes to lower Jeremiah into the cistern. The cistern didn’t have any water in it, but only mud. And Jeremiah sank down into the mud.


The king was very important to us.\par He was like the breath we breathe.\par But the king was trapped by them.\par The king was chosen by the Lord himself.\par We had said about the king,\par “We will live in his shadow.\par He protects us from the nations.”\par


Jerusalem, we used blood\par to seal your Agreement.\par So I am setting your people free\par from that empty hole in the ground. {\cf2\super [24]} \par
