10 So I went in and looked. I saw statues of all kinds of reptiles {\cf2\super [65]} and animals that you hate to think about. Those statues were the filthy idols that the people of Israel worshiped. There were pictures of those animals carved all around on every wall!

“You must not make any idols. [124] Don’t make any statues or pictures of anything up in the sky or of anything on the earth or of anything down in the water.


Another worker uses his stringline {\cf2\super [393]} and compass {\cf2\super [394]} to draw lines on the wood. \{This shows where he should cut\}. Then the man uses his chisels {\cf2\super [395]} and cuts a statue from the wood. He uses his calipers {\cf2\super [396]} to measure the statue. This way, the worker makes the wood look exactly like a man. And this statue of a man does nothing but sit in its house.


I will pay the people of Judah back for the bad things they did—I will punish them two times for every sin. I will do this because they have made my land ‘dirty.’ They made my land ‘dirty’ with their terrible idols. I hate those idols. But they have filled my country with their idols.”


Judah did not care that she was acting like a prostitute. So she made her country ‘dirty.’ She did the sin of adultery by worshiping idols made out of stone and wood.


Jeremiah said to those people, “The Lord remembered that you made sacrifices in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. You and your ancestors, {\cf2\super [359]} your kings, your officials, and the people of the land did that. The Lord remembered what you had done, and thought about that.


I sent my prophets to those people again and again. Those prophets were my servants. Those prophets spoke my message and said to the people, ‘Don’t do this terrible thing. I hate for you to worship idols.’


Then you will know that I am the Lord. It was my law that you broke! You did not obey my commands. You decided to live like the nations around you.”


“Oholibah continued to be unfaithful to me. In Babylon, she saw pictures of men carved on the walls. These were pictures of Chaldean {\cf2\super [184]} men wearing their red uniforms.


Then I noticed that Jaazaniah son of Shapham and the 70 elders (leaders) of Israel were there with the people worshiping in that place. There they were, right at the front of the people! And each leader had his own incense {\cf2\super [66]} dish in his hand. The smoke from the burning incense was rising into the air.


Then \{God\} said to me, “Go in and look at the terrible, evil things that the people are doing here.”


They gave up the glory of God who lives forever. People traded that glory for the worship of idols {\cf2\super [13]} made to look like earthly people. People traded God’s glory for things that look like birds, animals, and snakes.


“Don’t eat anything that the Lord hates.


So be careful! Don’t sin and destroy yourselves by making false gods or statues in the shape of any living thing. Don’t make an idol that looks like a man or a woman.


And don’t make an idol that looks like anything that crawls on the ground or like a fish in the sea.


In that new land, you must be careful not to forget the Agreement that the Lord your God made with you. You must obey the Lord’s command. Don’t make any idols in any form!


“You will live in the country a long time. You will have children and grandchildren there. You will grow old there. And then you will ruin your lives—you will make all kinds of idols! When you do that, you will make God very angry!
