Nebuchadnezzar took from Jerusalem all the treasures in the Lord’s temple [317] and all the treasures in the king’s house. Nebuchadnezzar cut up all the golden dishes that Solomon king of Israel had put in the Lord’s temple. This happened just like the Lord said.


Nebuzaradan burned the Lord’s temple, [318] the king’s house, and all the houses in Jerusalem. He destroyed even the largest houses.


Let the people my enemy owes money to\par take everything he owns.\par Let strangers take everything he worked for.\par


God, some people from other nations\par came to fight your people.\par Those people ruined your holy temple.\par They left Jerusalem in ruins.\par


‘The houses in Jerusalem will become as “dirty” as this place, Topheth. The kings’ palaces {\cf2\super [161]} will be ruined like this place, Topheth. Why? Because the people worshiped false gods on the roofs of those houses. {\cf2\super [162]} They worshiped the stars and burned sacrifices to honor them. They gave drink offerings to false gods.’”


Strangers—the most terrible people in the world—cut it down and scattered its branches on the mountains and in the valleys. Its broken limbs drifted down the rivers flowing through that land. There was no more shadow under that tree, so all the people left.
