12 One third of your people will die inside the city from diseases and hunger. One third of your people will die in battle outside the city. And then I will pull out my sword and chase one third of your people into faraway countries.

Because of all these things, the Master, the Lord All-Powerful, the Mighty One of Israel, says, “I will punish you, my enemies. You will not cause me any more trouble.


“I will force you to leave your homes.\par You will run in all directions.\par You will be like chaff {\cf2\super [116]} blown away\par by the desert wind.\par


The people of Judah might begin to fast {\cf2\super [122]} \{and pray to me\}. But I will not listen to their prayers. Even if they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings to me, I will not accept those people. I will destroy the people of Judah with war. I will take away their food, and the people of Judah will starve. And I will destroy them with terrible diseases.”


Those people might ask you, ‘Where will we go?’ You tell them this: This is what the Lord says:


The enemy will attack with swords\par and kill the people.\par They will kill the survivors {\cf2\super [129]} from Judah.\par A woman might have seven sons,\par \{but they will all die.\}\par She will cry and cry\par until she becomes weak\par and not able to breathe.\par She will be upset and confused.\par Her bright day will become dark from sadness.”\par


Any person that stays in Jerusalem will die. That person will die by a sword, or from hunger, or from a terrible sickness. But any person that goes out of Jerusalem and surrenders to the Babylonian army will live! That army has surrounded the city. So no person can bring food into the city. But any person that leaves the city will save his life.


I will send a sword, starvation, and disease against them. I will attack them until they have all been killed. Then they will no longer be on the land which I gave to them and to their ancestors. {\cf2\super [198]}


I am watching over those people of Judah. But I am not watching over them to take care of them. I am watching over them to hurt them. The people of Judah that live in Egypt will die from hunger and be killed by swords. They will continue to die until they are finished.


So the Lord All-Powerful,\par the God of Israel, says,\par “I will soon make the people of Judah\par eat bitter food.\par I will make them drink poisoned water.\par


I will scatter the people of Judah\par through other nations.\par They will live in strange nations.\par They and their fathers never knew\par about those countries.\par I will send men with swords.\par Those men will kill the people of Judah.\par They will kill them until the people\par are finished.”\par


I will force the king’s people to live in the foreign countries around Israel. And I will scatter his army to the winds. And the enemy soldiers will chase after them.


\{God said,\} “Or, I might send an enemy army to fight against that country. Those soldiers would destroy that country—I would remove all the people and animals from that country.


\{God said,\} “Or, I might send a disease against that country. I will pour my anger down on those people. I will remove all the people and animals from that country.


Then I will stop being angry and jealous. I will calm down. I won’t be angry any more.


“The signs tell him to take the road on his right, the road leading to Jerusalem! He plans to bring the battering rams. {\cf2\super [162]} He will give the command, and his soldiers will begin the killing. They will shout the battle cry. Then they will build a wall of dirt around the city. They will build a dirt road leading up to the walls. They will build wooden towers to attack the city.


“‘You sinned against me\par and became stained with sin.\par I wanted to wash you and make you clean.\par But the stains would not come out.\par I won’t try washing you again\par until my hot anger is finished with you!\par


“‘You must tell them that the Lord and Master says these things, “On my life I promise, those people living in those ruined cities will be killed with a sword! If anyone is out in the country, I will let animals kill him and eat him. If people are hiding in the fortresses {\cf2\super [272]} and the caves, they will die from disease.


I scattered them among the nations and spread them through all the lands. I gave them the punishment they should have for the bad things they did.


They won’t bring shame to my name by putting their threshold next to my threshold, and their door post next to my door post. In the past, only a wall separated them from me. So they brought shame to my name every time they sinned and did those terrible things. That is why I became angry and destroyed them.


People in Jerusalem will be so hungry that parents will eat their own children and children will eat their own parents. I will punish you in many ways. And the people that are left alive, I will scatter them to the winds.


Why? Because there won’t be enough food and water for the people. People will be terrified of each other—they will see each other wasting away because of their sins.


\{God said,\} “But I will let a few of your people escape. They will live in other countries for a short time. I will scatter them and force them to live in other countries.


The enemy with his sword is outside the city. Disease and hunger is inside the city. If a person goes out into the fields, then an enemy soldier will kill him. If he stays in the city, hunger and disease will destroy him.


Your end is coming now!\par I will show how angry I am at you.\par I will punish you for the bad things you did.\par I will make you pay for all the terrible things you did.\par


I will scatter you among the nations. I will pull out my sword and destroy you. Your land will become empty and your cities will be destroyed.


If they are captured\par and taken away by their enemies,\par I will command the sword,\par and it will kill them there.\par Yes, I will watch over them,\par but I will watch for ways\par to give them troubles,\par not for ways to do good things.”\par


I am giving the command\par \{to destroy the nation Israel\}.\par I will scatter the people of Israel\par among all nations.\par But it will be like a person \{sifting flour\}.\par A person shakes flour through a sifter. {\cf2\super [117]} \par \{The good flour falls through,\}\par but the bad lumps are caught.\par \{It will be that way with Jacob’s family.\}\par


I will bring the other nations against them\par like a storm.\par They didn’t know those nations,\par but the country will be destroyed\par after those nations pass through.\par This pleasant country will be destroyed.”\par


“You will not have any peace among these nations. You will have no place to rest. The Lord will fill your mind with worry. Your eyes will feel tired. You will be very upset.


I looked and there before me was a pale-colored horse. The rider on the horse was death. Hades {\cf2\super [50]} was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth. They were given power to kill people by using the sword, by starving, by disease, and with the wild animals of the earth.
