Manasseh built altars {to honor false gods} in the Lord’s temple. (This is the place the Lord was talking about when he said, “I will put my name in Jerusalem.”)


Manasseh sacrificed his own son and burned him on the altar. [255] Manasseh used different ways of trying to know the future. He visited mediums [256] and wizards. [257]


The faces of the people show that they are guilty of doing wrong. And they are proud of their sin. They are like the people of Sodom {\cf2\super [31]} —they don’t care who sees their sin. It will be very bad for them. They have brought much trouble to themselves.


{\cf2\super [97]} “Why is my lover (Judah)\par in my house (temple)?\par She has no right to be there.\par She had done many evil things.\par Judah, do you think that special promises\par and animal sacrifices will stop you\par from being destroyed?\par Do you think you can escape punishment\par by offering sacrifices to me?”\par


“The prophets and even the priests are evil.\par I have seen them doing evil things\par in my own temple.”\par This message is from the Lord.\par


Now, family of Israel, the Lord my Master says these things, “If any person wants to worship his filthy idols, then let him go and worship them. But later, don’t think you will get any advice from me! You will not ruin my name any more! Not when you continue to give your gifts to your filthy idols.”


You people hate my holy things. You treat my special days of rest like they are not important.


They also treated my special days of rest and my holy place like they were not important.


You brought foreigners into my temple—and those people were not truly circumcised {\cf2\super [417]} —they did not give themselves completely to me. In this way you made my temple unclean. You broke our agreement and did terrible things, and then you gave me the offerings of bread, the fat, and the blood. But this only made my temple unclean.


The Lord my Master says, “\{Jerusalem,\} I promise by my life \{that I will punish you\}! I promise that I will punish you! Why? Because you did terrible things to my Holy Place. You did horrible things that made it dirty! I will punish you! I won’t show any mercy. I will not feel sorry for you!


Then he led me to the inner courtyard of the Lord’s temple. At that place, I saw 25 men bowing down and worshiping. They were between the porch and the altar—but they were facing the wrong way! Their backs were to the Holy Place. They were bowing down to worship the sun!


The judges in Jerusalem accept bribes\par to help them decide who wins in court.\par The priests in Jerusalem must be paid\par before they will teach the people.\par People must pay the prophets\par before they will look into the future.\par And then those leaders expect the Lord\par to help them. They say,\par “The Lord lives here with us.\par So nothing bad will happen to us.”\par


Then the guards took Jesus from Caiaphas’ house to the \{Roman governor’s\} palace. It was early in the morning. The Jews there would not go inside the palace. They did not want to make themselves unclean, {\cf2\super [237]} because they wanted to eat the Passover {\cf2\super [238]} meal.
