Don’t worry if a person asks for bad things to happen to you. If you did nothing wrong, nothing bad will happen. That person’s words are like birds that fly past you and never stop.

I will comfort you. Then you will remember the terrible things you did, and you will be ashamed.

I made the tree fall—and the nations shook with fear at the sound of the falling tree. I sent the tree down to the place of death, to join the other people that had gone down into that deep hole. In the past, all the trees of Eden, the best of Lebanon, drank that water. Those trees were comforted in the world below.

The Lord kept the terrible things ready for us—and he made those things happen to us. The Lord did this because he is fair in everything he does. But we still have not listened to him.

“Lord, you are good, and goodness belongs to you! But shame belongs to us today. Shame belongs to the people from Judah and Jerusalem. Shame belongs to all the people of Israel—to the people that are near, and to the people that are far away. Lord, you scattered those people among many nations. And the people of Israel in all those nations should be ashamed. They should be ashamed of all the bad things they did against you, Lord.

“But maybe the people will confess (admit) their sins. And maybe they will confess the sins of their ancestors. [452] Maybe they will admit that they turned against me. Maybe they will admit that they sinned against me.

Maybe they will admit that I turned against them and brought them into the land of their enemies. Those people will be like strangers to me. But maybe they will become humble [453] and accept the punishment for their sin.

But you people are hard and stubborn. You refuse to change. So you are making your own punishment greater and greater. You will get that punishment on the day when God will show his anger. On that day people will see God’s right judgments.

And you must remember the whole trip that the Lord your God has led you through these 40 years in the desert. The Lord was testing you. He wanted to make you humble. He wanted to know the things in your heart. He wanted to know if you would obey his commands.

All people will fear you, O Lord.\par All people will praise your name.\par Only you are holy.\par All people will come and worship before you,\par because it is clear that you do the things\par that are right.”\par

The people have spilled the blood\par of your holy people {\cf2\super [118]} \par and your prophets. {\cf2\super [119]} \par Now you have given those people\par blood to drink.\par This is what they deserve.”\par
