16 “But I will let a few of the people live. They won’t die from the disease, hunger, and war. I will let those people live so they can tell other people about the terrible things they did against me. And then they will know that I am the Lord.”

I will make your people as many as the dust of the earth. If people could count all the dust on earth, then they could count your people.


Those evil people curse and tell lies.\par Punish them for the things they said.\par Let their pride trap them.\par


\{This is true,\} but the Lord All-Powerful did allow a few people to continue living. We were not completely destroyed like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [6]}


There might be a few trees left standing in the forest. But even a child will be able to count them.


Your people are very many. They are like the sands of the sea. But only a few of the people will be left to come back to the Lord. Those people will return to God, but first, your country will be destroyed. God has announced that he will destroy the land. And then goodness will come into the land; it will be like a river flowing full.


At harvest time, people knock olives\par from olive trees.\par But, a few olives are left in the trees.\par It will be like that in this land\par among the nations.\par


But a tenth of the people will be allowed to stay in the land. These people will return \{to the Lord\} even though they were to be destroyed. These people will be like an oak tree. When the tree is chopped down, a stump is left. This stump (the people remaining) is a very special seed.


People of Israel and Judah, I am with you.”\par This message is from the Lord.\par “And I will save you.\par I sent you to those nations.\par But I will completely destroy\par all those nations.\par It is true, I will destroy those nations,\par but I will not destroy you.\par You must be punished\par for the bad things you did.\par But I will discipline you fairly.”\par


The Lord says these things:\par “The whole country will be ruined.\par (But I will not completely destroy the land.)\par


Then those people will know that I am the Lord. They will know that I scattered them among the nations. They will know that I forced them to go to other countries.


Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said,


But even in those other nations they ruined my good name. How? Those nations said, ‘These are the Lord’s people, but they left his land. \{So there must be something wrong with the Lord!\}’


You will remember the bad things you did. You will remember that those things were not good. Then you will hate yourselves because of your sins and the terrible things you did.”


The enemy with his sword is outside the city. Disease and hunger is inside the city. If a person goes out into the fields, then an enemy soldier will kill him. If he stays in the city, hunger and disease will destroy him.


But God has decided to make that terrible time short. If that time were not made short, then no person would continue living. But God will make that time short to help the people he has chosen.


But the gate that opens the way to \{true\} life is very small. And the road to \{true\} life is very difficult (hard). Only a few people find that road.


And Isaiah cries out about Israel {\cf2\super [91]} :
