The Angel of the Lord also said,


So I will go and see if things are as bad as I have heard. Then I will know for sure.”


God heard the boy crying. And God’s angel called to Hagar from heaven. He said, “What is wrong, Hagar? Don’t be afraid! The Lord has heard the boy crying there.


Leah gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben. [166] Leah named him this because she said, “The Lord has seen my troubles. My husband doesn’t love me. So now maybe my husband will love me.”


“The angel said, ‘Look, only the striped and spotted goats are mating. I am causing this to happen. I have seen all the wrong things Laban is doing to you. I am doing this so that you can have all the new baby goats.


But the God of my ancestors, [182] the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, [183] was with me. If God had not been with me, then you would have sent me away with nothing. But God saw the trouble that I had. God saw the work that I did. And last night God proved that I am right.”


Lord, you help humble people. But you bring shame to proud people.


Then Jehoahaz begged the Lord to help them. And the Lord listened to him. The Lord had seen the troubles of Israel and how the king of Aram troubled the Israelites.


“Go back and speak to Hezekiah, the leader of my people. Tell him, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestor [244] David says: I have heard your prayer and I have seen your tears. So I will heal you. On the third day, you will go up to the temple of the Lord.


You saw our ancestors {\cf2\super [51]} suffering in Egypt.\par And you heard them call for help\par by the Red Sea.\par


But whenever God’s people were in trouble,\par \{they always called to God for help\}.\par And God listened to their prayers every time.\par


The Lord’s words are true and pure\par like silver melted in a hot fire.\par They are pure like silver that was melted and made pure seven times.\par


My enemies have set a trap for me.\par I am ready to give up.\par But the Lord knows what is happening to me.\par


The Lord does what his followers want.\par The Lord listens to his followers.\par He answers their prayers and saves them.\par


Why? Because the Lord helps poor people who have troubles.\par The Lord is not ashamed of them.\par He doesn’t hate them.\par If people call to the Lord for help,\par he will not hide from them.\par


I went to God for help.\par And he listened.\par He saved me from all the things I fear.\par


This poor man called to the Lord for help.\par And the Lord heard me.\par He saved me from all my troubles.\par


Lord, surely you can see what is happening.\par So don’t keep quiet.\par Don’t leave me.\par


Then, at the gates of Jerusalem,\par I can sing praises to you, Lord.\par I will be very happy\par because you saved me.”\par


The Egyptian people decided to make life hard for the people of Israel. So the Egyptians put slave masters over the people. These masters forced the Israelites to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses for the king. The king used these cities to store grain and other things.


Then a new king began to rule Egypt. This king did not know Joseph.


If you do anything wrong to those widows or orphans, then I will know it. I will hear about their suffering.


If I have truly pleased you, then teach me your ways. I want to know you. Then I can continue to please you. Remember that all these are your people.”


So the Egyptian slave masters and the Hebrew [45] foremen went to the people of Israel and said, “Pharaoh has decided that he will not give you straw for your bricks.


That same day, Pharaoh gave a command to make work harder for the people of Israel. Pharaoh said to the slave masters and Hebrew foremen,


The people had many troubles,\par but the Lord was not against them.\par The Lord loved the people\par and felt sorry for them.\par So the Lord saved them.\par He sent his special angel to save them.\par He picked them up and carried them,\par and \{he will take care of them\} forever.\par


But we asked the Lord for help. The Lord heard us and sent an angel to help us. The Lord has brought us out of Egypt.


I have seen my people suffer much in Egypt. I have heard my people crying. I have come down to save them. Come now, Moses, I am sending you back to Egypt.’ {\cf2\super [135]}


“At this time tomorrow I will send a man to you. He will be from the family group of Benjamin. You must anoint [98] him and make him the new leader over my people Israel. This man will save my people from the Philistines. I have seen my people suffering. I have listened to the cries from my people.”
